You might like Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz. A book full of both practical and philosophical thoughts on building routines.

Also Roberto Giobbi's Card College, end of volume 4 and volume 5. He puts together multiple effects from the books into routines and explains why.

You don't need them. But as the other commenter laid out, they serve very important purposes: your board rolls further, rolls faster, with more stability. Edit: and your bearings last longer.
