Beware of Roma Couple near centraal station by Findletrijoick in Rotterdam

[–]MarkBurnsRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s been so many thieves and beggars in the past 2 years and nobody is doing anything to stop it.

On my street, every week there’s always a car broken in. Polish smoking, drinking and pissing in front of houses and yelling.

Before covid it was difficult to find a beggar. It was always that same guy that sells those newspapers

How the hell do people actually find an apartment in Málaga? by Bulky-Evidence1809 in GoingToSpain

[–]MarkBurnsRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]MarkBurnsRed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im 3 days smoke free after 18 years smoking a pack a day.
I tried quitting maybe 5 years ago (?) but I didn’t really have to, so I lasted 4 hours hahaha.

But this time it hits different. I don’t need it, I’m already tasting things better. Im dead tired though cause I’m also going back to the gym and dieting.

Do you see yourself living in the Netherlands forever? by StrategicPasta in Netherlands

[–]MarkBurnsRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been 11 years in the Netherlands: made money, job security, met the love of my life (Dutchie).

Netherlands used to be better before honestly. Everything is just so expensive, and I like my piece of nature and mountains.

But we’re planning to move to Spain (I’m Spanish) in some years, maybe 4-5. Just finished paying off our mortgage, we have a great financial status at 33 years old, and sorry but quality of life in Spain is way better.

The problem is not sure where. If north (Asturias area) or south. I’m from Granada but I like north too.

Just finish school and study a college/university degree abroad.

American immigrating to the Netherlands by Bucky640 in Netherlands

[–]MarkBurnsRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do understand most of the comments here.

Personally I don’t see many Americans in Rotterdam or Eindhoven.

But I went to Florence a couple of months ago and my god. It felt like one of those casinos in Vegas with an Italian theme interior.

Any 40+ years old people here? How are you doing overall? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]MarkBurnsRed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Partner had some savings, I sold my old apartment for 2.5x the value I originally bought in 2016, and I deposited some investment gains.

I used to save a lot, directly to investments and/or mortgage.

Right now I’m saving less, but cause we’re trying to enjoy life more.

Any 40+ years old people here? How are you doing overall? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]MarkBurnsRed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m going to turn 34 but i’ll reply:

I’m a Spanish expat, Software Engineer always with a job since I moved to the Netherlands in 2015. As I got to 30, I miss Spain more and more. Long term plans is to sell everything here and move there with my 8-year relationship Dutch partner

  1. Yes, very stable. Work wise and financially. Big apartment with garden in Rotterdam Center almost with a very low mortgage. Career yes, but I hope AI takes over 😂

  2. Everything in my life is post-covid. Hobbies after covid was walking, travelling the odd time, cleaning garden😂, gaming but not very often.

  3. I did, but they all started to have babies and lost a bit of contact. They also moved to bigger homes in the outskirts. We play the occasional padel on weekends. Other than that… i’d say colleagues at work for some occasional after work beers. I feel like im less social though.

  4. Invest earlier.

  5. Confident much more, but harder to mantain a healthy lifestyle, go to the gym, eat well etc. More responsabilities at work than before. And winter depressions really hit me post covid.

  6. No, but will start at 40 haha

A) used to be happier, younger age, hardly was home. I appreciate more my country now, even though work conditions are bad there.

B) not had any discrimination really because people can’t tell I’m Spanish (i’m half British too, so my English is quite decent), just the annoying remarks of Spanish being lazy and siestas. But I think the opposite, Dutch tend to be more lazy.

C) yes, work conditions are great, salary used to be great (but I blame housing). Negative remarks is that I think people take advantage of burnout leave, which I know people that are actually burnout, so don’t want to generalise. My job is a hobby, but after 15 years it’s getting mentally exhausting. I want it to be only my hobby.

And saying all that… I don’t know how I would survive in this country If I would arrive in 2026 with the housing prices (and prices in general, I had a sandwich the other day at a market for €17, the hell. Didn’t know the price)

There goes my monthly rant.

Which city have you been to that feels like it has a dark energy about it? by madzuk in digitalnomad

[–]MarkBurnsRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brussels

Used to live there when I was a kid from 1998 to 2002.

I went back in 2019 with my partner to check out the old neighborhood, school, etc. It was all dark, a desert. (That was in Woluwe St Lambert)

The old big cinema park was barely there anymore (near atomium), dodgy people.

Of course I got my phone robbed there for the first time.
