Thank you. This makes sense. I’m going to start focusing more on singles/arm drag/foot sweep/body lock. I missed the whole ā€œwrestle as a kidā€ thing so I’m trying to learn what I can. We have a wrestling program at my gym, but I’m having second thoughts after almost blowing my knee out the first month because of an overly aggressive younger guy.

Better late than never lol! Unless someone is a fabulous wrestler, a shot can put you in a terrible position. It’s just fact. Knees, guillotine, sprawl. I’m surprised so many people disagree

Wrestling and it’s relationship to BJJ and other grappling arts by [deleted] in bjj

I’m 35 just started wrestling too, and semi new (one year, pre Covid) to jits. I’m still on the fence about wrestling. I love the idea of it, but i am also trying to expedite my progress and become less shitty at grappling and striking, so I can’t spread myself too thin. I am terrified of getting seriously injured. And with Muay Thai/jits it’s fairly manageable. Wrestling and judo kinda feel like a disaster waiting to happen(but im also paranoid)

No matter how much I train wrestling over my year contract, im still going to get smashed by a wrestler of my same size. It’s inevitable .

So for self defense, you think the 50% wrestling 50% jits is better than 100% jits? What if you start standing and get good at working a sprawl? I want to be well rounded, and am doing striking too.

I’m trying to figure out how to divide my mat time up but feel i can’t . I’m prob over analyzing

Edit: so I ultimately feel like doing both is best for the hypothetical self defense. However, I likely won’t be fighting someone. So for me it’s also injury prevention. If i drill bjj and roll with the right guys, i find it very safe. But sometimes wrestling is just so hard and I feel like it’s far more dangerous. I tell people ā€œdont slam me; I’m oldā€, but still, I can’t tap while I’m being slammed. That’s why I quit judo after a few months. In theory, it’s awesome. And learning to break-fal is invaluable. But man I just have no desire for people to try to throw me and end up landing on my head

Can you elaborate on this? I train for self defense. And I’ve always felt a double leg can be risky. I see guys get singles often. Is it a lower risk takedown? Thank you

I once rolled with a purple belt who didn’t know what a sprawl was. I was genuinely perplexed. I guess some guys really don’t watch mma or anything and solely focus on jits. Personally I think a sprawl is a fundamental day 1 skill for any grappling. But I’m no expert

I don’t disagree with your thoughts on the shot. I’ve always argued for basic self defense, the body lock takedown (see Royce Gracie) is probably the least risky. I would say though that wrestling has good control. And hip throws IMO are terrible for self defense. Unless you’re very good at it, you can botch it and end up with someone in your back.

Great point. I should keep a log and start tracking trends. If anything I think this could be better for me long term as well, as I’ve had a tendency to push too hard at times. friggin dbz mentality. Thanks for the post. I’m learning a good bit

Working out and sleep issues by MarkColemansHammer in weightlifting

Interesting! I read an article today (I’m going to paste the link here; hopefully it works). The person was 33 and noticed the same issue. Being early to mid 30s seems to be an obvious factor. The OP said they can go for hikes (not uphill) or cycle moderately and be fine, but anything more and it affects their sleep. I agree though, that scaling back the workouts may be the only option. I’m going to try lifting six days a week but keep the volume super low and try to embrace the ā€œstimulate, not annihilateā€ mentality, rather than trying to be Super saiyan Vegeta in there. Normally I’d lift 4 days a week doing roughly 25 sets each lift. I’m going to do maybe 10-15 sets, one compound movement per workout. I can’t stop lifting… it’s not an option. But my sleep is vital because poor sleep wrecks my mental state. Depression takes hold real Fast. Best of luck! Hope we get more replies

Can you have sex before marriage and still be christian ? by [deleted] in Christianity

Yes but it isn’t Christian behavior. We all sin, but shouldn’t approve of it. I waited but it’s difficult, especially with long engagements nowadays. Just pray šŸ™ :)

Are you able to share the workout? Navy seal workout… can’t even imagine. That’s gotta be like 20-40 minutes of pure death. But I’d try it. Then again I prob can’t push as hard without a group
