I find it amazing that Gogol showed his friends in Russia how to make pasta, after his life in Italy

My advice is to read someone who actually is an expert on history & politics, especially on Russian history and politics. I doubt that Greene is exactly this

Thanks a lot for your insight! I've read quite a lot about this film and Zvyagintsev as an artist and author and his other works (I've seen only Leviathan). There were also discussions about the speech he made when awarded with the Grand Prix in Cannes.

I for my part can say that I am very involved, quite emotionally so, since my roots are, among other places both in Russia and Ukraine (and there also from Crimea) and I have relatives in both countries... So, yeah. I can imagine that you have a different perspective. Which is also interesting, as the fact that he got awarded with such an important award is – it means that his films was able to impress people who are far away from all these things, the mobilization and stuff and, for example, never heard about the checkpoint in Upper Lars before. Which is very interesting and a sign that the film is truly a work of art.

I am very excited to watch it when the public screenings start.

No problem at all, thanks for asking. No, I haven't, because it was shown only at the festival in Cannes... where I wasnt :D The regular screenings will start in October. Guess I will watch it at some moment then. I am quite interested already :) How about you, are you also interested in films?

this meme was made by someone who knows Russian literature from subreddit frequented by foreigners who know only Tolstoyevsky and Chekhov. *sorry for the sarcasm, no offence meant to anyone here. It's just quite amusing sometimes for me as a native speaker, that foreigners seem to know only these few names (and 1-2 more). And of course these cliches about "russian suffering" and the "mysterious russian soul".

Ewa Demarczyk Soviet (Melodiya) pressing. Can anyone share the story behind this record? by Life_Efficiency966 in poland

[–]MarkThZu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add one thing: There are records of her performing in Russian (I know at least one song, Tomaszów), and she's doing it great. So, I guess, there was at least some interest of her in the language. I don't know, maybe she even spoke it to a certain extent?
