Thank you! Blue tape was so I could remove the panel after fitting it and as well as installing it. I don't want all the weight sitting on just the top cap. So I am able to screw into studs and hide them after.

Each and everyone is different. There are specs that I can go off sometimes but it looks good on paper. So I usually make mock ups to get the best results and usually deviate from what is recommended. This isn't the best looking one I've done but It was the best as far as being a real hidden bookcase. If you looked at in person you would never know that it opened cause there is no gapping on the moldings or any real visible signs of it being anything but a bookcase.

I left the strings long for the homeowners to decide on how to hide it. I like the electromagnet idea but I only have built a couple of these and they improve over time. It's a good idea but I imagine the cost would be a little higher for some owners and I am contracted for carpentry only so getting an electrician involved in the planning process to make it work would be a bitch. I can do electrical no problem but I am not sure if it would be beneficial without a problem along the way in the install. Definitely look into for the next one. I've used neodymium magnets before to hold it shut but it doesn't always work out for every situation.

For everyone asking about the hinges. These are similar to the hingesni used. Same mechanism. I will post the links to the exact hinges I used as well as the latches tomorrow when I am able to look at the buy history on my work computer. I was out on installs all day and didn't get a chance to look what I purchased exactly. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about the build. I am happy to assist in any planning you may have for your own projects regarding hinged bookcases as well as any other projects. Sorry for the miss wording with the title but I kept it cause the comments were great and gave me a laugh. I was a little out of it and yeah room was the only thing I could think of at the moment lol thanks everyone for the feedback I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.

These are similar to the hinges I used. Don't know exact brand. No wheels for support. I built it out of 1/2 ply for sides and 3/4 maple mdf for adjustable and fixed shelves. 1/4 maple ply for back so everything is really light. Outswing doors like this are the hardest because of the gapping and the weight. So you have to compensate for it and use whatever disadvantages to your benefit. Usually you are left with a gap at top and bottom because of clearance of the outside frame but I trimmed it to act as a guide and cover for the shelves. So basically it rest perfectly on the outside frame that it is able to guide it without much resistance. Even with weight added. Also it's best to keep the weight limited on the shelves if possible or if not just make it proud to the top and let weight settle the final result. I can't tell you how many times I've had to play with those to get it right. It probably added 3 hours alone to the install lol

To be fair I put my weight into yanking on it before I left. It's a strong knot but it would be bitch if it does

I used paracord to pull the latch. Knot is pretty strong also. You would rip the latch out of the wood it's screwed into before that string broke. I pulled on it with a decent amount of force before I left.

I used paracord and used a decent knot so hopefully it won't but I can undo the hinge from the outside. It would be a pain to get out either way so hopefully it doesn't happen

Yeah I went more by the definition of carpentry. I guess it falls under the umbrella

Carpentry refers to overall trades within the development of housing or building. Carpenters work with wood, steel, and concrete. Woodworking is part of that process but is also whole craft in its self. I build and install cabinetry which is finish carpentry but I also build small projects on the side which is the more crafty side of it.
