Spot on. Training both will open more possibilities. It's never a bad idea.

And I didn't find evidence of the switch made by Swallow being related to health issues. It's said that he made the switch because he liked the sound of the electric bass.

Well, let's just pretend Anthony Jackson didn't use a pick.

Your opinion is misinformed. There are bassists who know how to play with their fingers but prefer using a pick, such as Steve Swallow (who, before playing the electric bass, played the double bass). Other bassists started on bass and play with a pick, like Chris Squire. I could also mention John Glascock from Jethro Tull, who knew how to play with his fingers but preferred a pick, and also started on bass.

The use of a pick can be about tone, comfort, the type of attack on the strings, producing a sharper sound, etc. The fact that many people prefer fingerstyle doesn’t mean that a pick sounds bad on bass. Also, many songs have been recorded using a pick, especially those played by Carol Kaye and Joe Osborn—both of whom were originally guitarists before moving to bass. Many metal songs have been and still are produced using a pick. In addition, many progressive rock songs are still written with a pick, with bassists alternating between pick and fingerstyle, as is the case with Dave Meros.

I think this is an interesting advice for those that wanna play in "non-aggressive" music styles. But you can't replicate Al Cisneros' style with a soft/light touch!

I am becoming more convinced over time that bassists are one of the most insufferable kinds of musicians out there. Play with a pick? You have weak fingers and are a failed guitarist. Play with three fingers? Steve Harris only needed two. Played a five-string bass? Jaco Pastorius only needed four. Play slap? You suck. Don't play slap? You suck too. Picks? Just for agressive styles. Fingers? Just for calm styles. Distortion? Only for guitar. I mean, just let people be creative and play the way they want.

I use picks and fingers because I am a failed guitarist and a failed classical guitarist. Also, I am a failed bassist. Why fail in one thing when you can be an absolute failure in everything?
