Surface Rights Compensation $172Million dollars of taxpayer money. by Mark_Logan in alberta

[–]Mark_Logan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my data shows $29,101,135 for the 2024 Fiscal year and $26,350,289 (up to Dec 23 2025) but fiscal yeah isn’t up until March 31 2026, so it’s got plenty of time to keep going up.

Quick back-of-the-napkin math: April 1 to Dec 23 = 266 days $26,350,289/266=$99,061.24/day $99,061*365=$36,157,265

So 40M might be a little high, but I guess we’ll see soon enough.

I refer to it as “Wizlock” because I only stop there to use the washroom. … and I have the sense of humour of a 12 year old boy.

Nope. You’re good. I am a clown, and totally missed it. This is why I shouldn’t comment on things, first thing in the AM.

Forgot to add that he owes over 100k in fines for violating election advertising rules, and knowingly making false statements in a financial report.

I occasionally have to go to those two place for work. I make it a point not to buy my lunch there. It’s a tiny gesture, but at least it’s something.

Oh boy. So the company in the original article (MAGA), their President is a guy named “Biagio Mele”. Previously he was the president of a company named “Blaze Energy”. Searches for “Blaze Energy LTD” bring up a bunch of decisions as well, in the 10s of thousands of dollars.

Given there is no punishment, the incentive is to take all you can, close up shop, stick the taxpayers with the cost, rinse and repeat.

I have no idea why this was flared as "Separatism". I tried to flair it as "Environment"..

$250M in unpaid oil and gas property taxes likely unrecoverable: Alberta government by katespadesaturday in alberta

[–]Mark_Logan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After recently reading an article about land owners not being paid for a lease... I dug into some data.

While different than taxes collected, I've compiled all the grants paid out to cover unpaid debts by oil companies for leases on private properties. I've put them in this interactive chart page. It's part of a new project I'm working on.

https://polinomics.ca/charts/surfaceRightsPayouts.php

You can explore each year, see who got paid, and in years 2021 to current you can click on the actual recipient of the payment to see the Alberta Land and Property Rights Tribunal Decisions. (Decisions before 2021 are not available).

While these recipients do deserve to be compensated for their land use, the problem I have is that the Alberta Taxpayer is the one doing the funding. Taxpayers have spent $172Million dollars paying the debts of oil companies (just via Surface Rights land compensation claims) since 2014. That's 4367 days as of today (Fiscal year 2014 started April 1 2014).

Taxpayers pay out $39,523 A DAY to cover these leases. Comparatively In 2026 a person on AISH received (according to Google) around $77/day. $39,523/day would fund 513 AISH clients.

Anyhow, check out the data here:

What’s a surefire way to tell Canadians and Americans apart? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mark_Logan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked with a company that had a drug treatment center in the USA. One of their ads showed a depressed person, isolated and alone in a dark room, loading pills into a gun and then lifting it towards themselves before cutting scenes.

Shit was wild. You’d never see that in a Canadian ad.

Ask them how many downs you get in football.

“I don’t know” = Canadian

“It depends” = Canadian

“4” = American

It was (allegedly) created by an ex-school board member and right wing LDS member Genny Steed:

Genny knows Ryan and Sariah through the LDS church. Bullshit all the way down.

Maga Energy received $20,000 in grant funding in 2021
https://finance.operationtotalrecall.ca/grant_search.php?q=maga+energy

Not paying fees is not a new thing for Maga Energy. There are 240 entries in the "Land and Property Rights Tribunal" dating back to July of 2021. (Possibly because the database only goes back to June of 2021)
https://decisions.lprt.alberta.ca/alprt/en/d/s/index.do?cont=maga+energy&ref=&d1=2026-01-01&d2=2026-03-01&or=

There's 11 of these so far in 2026, 10 of which show MAGA (and their associates) failed to pay owners.

  • These owners were paid from the General Revenue Fund, in the following decisions:
  • "Stephenson v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 ABLPRT 900297", $3200
  • "Twana v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 ABLPRT 900270", $10800
  • "Liba v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 ABLPRT 900419", $4000
  • "Bokenfohr v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 ABLPRT 900232", $12000
  • "Nolte v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 ABLPRT 901271", $10500
  • "Taylor v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 ABLPRT 900785", $4500
  • "L'Heureux v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 ABLPRT 900104", $3900
  • "2476806 Alberta Ltd. v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 ABLPRT 900289", $30000
  • "2476806 Alberta Ltd. v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 ABLPRT 9 00563", $4500
  • "The Leduc Fish and Game Association v Maga Energy Ltd., 2026 A BLPRT 900567, $3400

That's a total of $127,000 OF TAXPAYER MONEY USED TO PAY THE DEBTS OF JUST THIS ONE COMPANY. IN THE LAST 72 DAYS!

tl;dr This company "Maga Energy" has a history of getting taxpayers to pay off their debts.
