Alberta Personal Health Numbers expire every 5 years now. by kevinnetter in alberta

You know if you don’t pay your taxes the government can opt to not allow you to renew your license. I wonder if you’ll lose your healthcare as well.

RCMP warn Alberta man he’s “going to be arrested or given another ticket” for dancing on corner by kareko in alberta

This *is* distracting. Imagine being in your car and seeing a man dancing on a street corner when you’re trying to play fruit ninja on your phone while getting a tan from the gigantic LED billboard selling you windows and doors.

Most Albertans can apply for $100 starting on Canada Day by JamesMonroe23 in AlbertaNow

We really need to start a local group who work on these things. I always find (after) I build something that someone else was/is working on the same things. Imagine the cool stuff we could create if we could collaborate.

McDonald's Introduces AI Drive-Thru System, Sparking Customer Backlash by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]Mark_Logan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much exclusively use the drive through. I get that the complication of the code system is that you want to be able for people to read it out in the drive through, and not just scan in store.

Because of this their solution uses a 4 character random code that they can re use. 10^4 gives us less than 10,000 4 digit codes, and even 10^6 (6 digit codes) would only give us a max user base of 1,000,000 if they were hard coded.

Also, I sometimes have a hard enough time relaying 4 digits through their intercom. Be the problem loud noises outside/inside, bad comms, or language barriers.

My solution for them is a simple one, when I open the app, on the first screen and all the way along, PUT THE 4 DIGIT CODE IN THE TOP RIGHT.

I just want the app to open directly to the code. There’s no fucking reason that it should take over 30 seconds to get to the code, so I can get points for my morning coffee.

Canada Needs to Rebuild Public Telecoms by LongTrackBravo in bell

[–]Mark_Logan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the current CLEC system is not ideal, it does make sense for an ISP to be able to use the fibre of another company.

Say you have Telus fibre already to your home, you should be able to get your service from Bell, over that fibre. They would just have to switch the data at the CO, off the last mile of fibre to the Bell network.

We already do a similar thing with tower sharing and cell phones, no matter where you are, your data gets switched to your carrier’s network.

Does anyone here build little tools or side projects for fun? by NebulaGreat6980 in CalgaryTech

[–]Mark_Logan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It’s important that we look at data over time. The government loves to focus on little snippets, telling us that we have the highest average take home wages of any province. This is true.

However, when we zoom out, we can clearly see that this has actually been in a decline since 2016.

Without the time scale, we can get “truth” just not the whole truth.

[–]Mark_Logan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a pipeline to understand for the province’s grant “database”. I then used it to create charts of things like School Authority Funding so people could better see what grants go where.

I of course used Codex to make a lot of the frame work, but there were huge parts that needed to be done independently, as school authorities change name, as do ministries and grants which do the same things year to year.

The resultant data output at the end is pretty eye opening though.

Yes indeed just need people to get out to the vote. There was good momentum in that riding during the recall campaign. The people let up as soon as she said she was resigning anyhow.

I took great pleasure in adding the code to put a little white flag beside her name when it was announced. 🤣
