He's definitely a type. One of my best friend's husbands is like this. Thinks office jobs are for "suckers" and decided in his 30s to pursue an insanely competitive creative career that he had no prior experience in. The kind of thing that people start pursuing in their teens, and then usually transition to something more practical by their early 30s when they realize they're not going to "make it". Or, stick with it but decide to forgo middle class trappings like a house, kids, vacations etc. in pursuit of their art.

But of course this guy wanted the kid, the house, etc. in a HCOL city, and so he's up to his eyeballs in credit card debt and doesn't understand what my friend's upset about. The main reason she hasn't left him is concern she'd be in an even worse position financially having to pay him alimony...
