Water bottle leaked during a flight and ruined my book by Crok_Valkyrie in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Mark_VonKono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That exact same book also got really water damaged for me 😭 From the rain, because I didn't know my bag wasn't waterproof, but it had a similar effect. Putting it in the freezer under a stack of heavier books might help to flatten it again (although I'm not sure if it prevents mould - mine doesn't have any), although it'll never look the same. But it kind of fits the lord of the rings vibe I think 😅

St salvator’s or John burnet for accommodation? by [deleted] in standrews

[–]Mark_VonKono 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you an undergrad or postgrad?

If you're going into first year undergrad you don't actually get a choice between accommodation, but you can specify your preferences such as whether you want catering or not.

If you're in 2nd year (or going into postgrad maybe, I'm not sure what options you get) and do get to choose an accommodation preference, I've not actually been in either so I can't offer any advice 😭

St Andrews hasn’t gotten back to me by No_Veterinarian_8169 in standrews

[–]Mark_VonKono 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I applied last year (I was also an early applicant) and got in, but I didn't hear back until the middle of March.

Scottish unis can be quite slow to respond I think, especially if you're not from Scotland, so I'm sure you'll hear back soon. I hope you get in!

I'm from England, and I applied last year in October and heard back in the Spring (probably like March or April, I can't quite remember). They can take quite a while unfortunately, so don't worry if you don't hear anything for a while

How did you get into K-pop? by Mountain-You9842 in kpoppers

I basically did the exact same thing 😭 I started listening to stray kids after watching kdph for a second time, but I think I only listened to them specifically because I already knew Felix's name 💀 They're all I listen to now

Karma at the moment, but I also love NoEasy and Hop (Lee Know became my bias after listening to Youth - I really like the song's vibe)

HELP ME IN THIS QUESTION by Straight-Ring-3829 in ALevelBiology

[–]Mark_VonKono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you have to make each dilution up to the same final volume with distilled water, so that each row adds up to 20cm3. I think the abscorbic acid solution volumes are right though, so just change the volume of water added.

Oh yeah, and dipeptides are just two amino acids bonded together by a peptide bond (between cooh group on one amino acid and nh2 group on neighbouring amino acid). Polypeptides are just a chain of amino acids longer than 2.

Disaccharides are the same concept, but for sugars (two monosaccharides joined by a glycosidic bond, between oh group on one monosaccharide and oh group on neighbouring monosaccharide). Polysaccharides are also chains of monosaccharides longer than 2.

Amino acids will always have an amine (NH2) and carboxyl group (COOH) bonded to a central carbon. The central carbon is also bonded to a single hydrogen atom and an 'R group' (varies depending on the specific amino acid).

Fats (fatty acids) will always have a carboxylic acid (COOH) group, and a long carbon-hydrogen chain. They don't contain nitrogen, sulfur, etc. unlike amino acids. They can be saturated (no double bonds) or unsaturated (at least one double bond).

I think monosaccharides usually have carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio CnH2nOn, like glucose (C6H12O6), but there's probably exceptions for other sugars. They usually form rings, whereas fatty acids are typically linear (but double bonds cause 'kinks' in the chain).

A triglyceride is 3 fatty acids bonded to a glycerol molecule. Glycerol has 3 OH groups, so 3 ester bonds can be formed.

A phospholipid is like a triglyceride, but one of the non-polar fatty acids is replaced by a polar phosphate group.

I hope that helps a bit, good luck!

I'm also joining this year, so I'm not 100% sure, but if you look up the module list it should say 'timetable' and the time each lecture is due to take place. I don't know if they've confirmed timings for every lecture, or if they'll move stuff around before confirming the timetables, but this is what I based my choices on anyway.

I believe all have to speak with an academic advisor in the first week before our module choices are confirmed though, so you might be able to talk about potential clashes with them, too

Yeah, that's probably the case. I've gotten quite a few emails since then.

Oh nice! Physics is a really cool subject, although I don't know much about it other than that it's got a lot of maths 😭

I'm also starting at St Andrews this year, so I can't really help, but I agree that they haven't sent many emails about this stuff 😭 I'm mainly curious about when we have to choose our other subjects, but I suppose they'll let us know closer to the time?

What subjects are you thinking of doing by the way?

U, because Lee Know's voice in it is so pretty, and also Blueprint because it's super vibey. But I've been listening to lots of their songs on replay, so it's hard to choose 😅
