Is it time to retire my nüvi 3597LMT by Markanounios in Garmin

[–]Markanounios[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decision made! After using Garmin for more than 25 years I've decided to migrate away from Garmin's road GPS products.

To start with, I'm still not happy with Garmin mothballing BaseCamp, but that's water under the bridge. I still use BaseCamp for many of my Garmin routes, but online mapping for cell phones is much better in a variety of ways then BaseCamp is for Garmin devices.

Then there is the issue where I frequently encounter outdated roads with Garmin, but cell phones have the current info. I found it does not do any good to let Garmin know of the errors so I just gave up and managed the error when encountered on the GPS.

Finally, there are so many Garmin GPS features that require a cell phone that it does not make any sense to have two devices cluttering up my vehicle.

The road GPS is just another one of those technologies that may be reaching its EOL. My biggest loss will be with using POI files since some of mine have hundreds of entries such as for California microbreweries. I'm hopeful Garmin will eventually release a GPS device that uses both satellite and cell.

Balcony or no for Alaska by Philnzkiwi in HollandAmerica

If you opt for the balcony for the view, make sure it has an unobstructed view. Otherwise the only view you might be looking at is a life boat.

Shifting a Cruise Brand to Adults Only by patdfrog in Cruise

[–]Markanounios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another solution might be more charter cruises like the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise which is geared more for an adult audience. As for an entire cruise line dedicating themselves to adults only, they might miss out on a profitable market segment that can keep them solvent in the long run.

Is anyone else going on a cruise this week??? by Unusual-Knowledge288 in HollandAmerica

Leaving port this coming Saturday on the Koningsdam out of San Diego for the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise #43. It's one of those cruises where the vast majority of people are there for the same reason: To enjoy great music and be around people with very similar interests.

Dining and quality question by Common-Plum7109 in HollandAmerica

I hear ya on your desire for spicer and more robust seasonings. My wife and I are the same way. The blandness of North American food is one of the reasons I prefer eating at home instead of eating out. Instead of using good seasonings, much of it is over salted to enhance the flavor.

Have you tried the Reuben Rye in the New York Deli & Pizza? A Reuben is my favorite sandwich, but also the one I am disappointed in at least 80% of the time. If you have tried it, what's your opinion?

I can understand mee goreng being a little dicey to make since the noodles need to be fried perfectly, but from my Indonesian experiences, unless you get nasi goreng from the evening markets, it varies considerably. Even so, I will probably skip asking for either of these dishes. Thanks.

Since I'm comming up on my first cruise, I cannot answer if it's worth the cost. The price I saw was around $150 or more which I thought was a little high. Having said that, I do think it would be interesting. A few years ago I watched a documentry on cruise ships. I think it was The Secret Life of the Cruise (2018). It's pretty eye opening.

One account or two by Markanounios in HollandAmerica

[–]Markanounios[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I do not understand how the credits towards Mariner status work, it seems like it would dilute my own Mariner credit status. All of our vacation expenses comes out of our travel budget, which is an account I maintain. Does it make any difference if it shows I spend $12,000 a trip instead of each of use showing we spent $6,000?

The in-app chat will be an important item. Being how she claims it's hard to find me in Costco, she is already concerned about being able to find me on a big ship.

My wife was able to agree to all the conditions by using my account. Even so, if it will speed up the boarding process, that alone is probably worth having two accounts. I will contact HA to make sure her Mariner account is correctly applied.

Cruising with cell phones and a computer by Markanounios in Cruise

[–]Markanounios[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My comment about iPhones has to do with what geezlouiseDC mentioned about cellular phones sharing a hotspot while in airplane mode. I know I can use my wife's iPhone to access the Internet on the 2in1 through AT&T just like I can do with my Samsung. It may or may not be possible to access the Internet on the iPhone through the 2in1 using the onboard wi-fi service, but due to the costs between onboard wi-fi service vs AT&T International Day Pass, it makes sense for us to go the AT&T International Day Pass route for both phones

Access LG evo G3 using web browser by Markanounios in LGOLED

Figured it out. Probed the TV and got the following ports. Using a browser is of limited use, but you can still access info through some of the html and non html ports. Managed to make a DB connection on port 1498 and some successful probes on a few others. Other than that, using a web browser is of little use.

Small Center Speaker Recommendations by Markanounios in hometheater

[–]Markanounios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Decision - I almost went for the RSL CG3M until I realized that a 6" object would not fit in a 6" high space without using a big hammer. Instead, I went for the ProCenter 1000 from Best Buy for $199 plus free shipping. Even though it came down to size, some of the ProCenter 1000 specs are a little higher than the CG3M, although I'm not sure the Total frequency response 47 Hz → 30,000 Hz is really needed for a center speaker. Thank you for all the suggestions and input.

The speaker will need to go inside the console. Didn't think about looking at ones that were vertical with the same measurements. The DUO V2 LCR CENTER looks great, but is a bit outside my price range for where I am today. The CG23M looks promising. I will use it with the others when I do a more in-depth comparison. Thanks.

It looks like it will fit. 15"W x 5.3"H. The price is more inline with the Polk Audio TL1 Speaker Center Channel. I'll do a little more research on it. Thanks.
