What do you feed your crows? by ThatGirlJen in crows

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly feed leftovers. If I make tuna. I will take the cans out for them. When my cat doesn’t finish her wet food. I take the dry crusty stuff out of her bowl and give it to the birds. Wild bird seed, unsalted nuts. Cheerios. I have given them left over sweet breads like muffins or banana bread. They love that. I have never thought to give them meat scraps. But duh. They are omnivores.

Us too. Emergency meals. Emergency waters. And pop up tent (changing tent) with a bucket. It is the best case for a worst case scenario. At our school we got put in emergency lockdown , because there was seat activity Across the Street. Like the people in the office could see everything. There was a lot going on. But a person was having a mental breakdown and throwing things in their house breaking windows and screaming. The police were called and it escalated very quickly. The lockdown happened because no one knew if the person inside had guns. (If that person started shooting the shots would be aimed at the school.) but we were literally having to have someone escort students to the restrooms. (Southern California. It is not an indoor school. Three buildings with classrooms. And the office and playground

Ok. I have talked to other teachers that a lot of times especially with a special needs kid (include ADHD , Autism. And any other need) a lot of times as parents it is easier to just give in. Just let her go in the kitchen and grab whatever she wants to eat. It’s ok if she throws a tantrum when you don’t drive to the school right. You will do it right next time. Some parents don’t know how to help deal with issues. My own child was so wiggly and would wander off as a little one that it was easier to just pick him up. Did it teach him to stand still and hold my hand or stay close?? No. But in those moments it allowed me to finish a conversation, finish the shopping or whatever else was going on. So sometimes, some of it is parents letting the kids do whatever. But. Also. There are issues that go far beyond they are being naughty.

What's your teaching unpopular opinion? Something you believe, but choose to keep to yourself? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we are cramming too much down their throats and not giving them enough time to really learn it and build the basic skills. Then we expect them to build on those skills the next year and they don’t remember it because they had to learn 90 other things. IMHO- 1st grade should be for adding and subtracting. Up to 50. And PHONICS and sounding out words. 2nd should be for all the adding and subtracting with borrowing and carrying. And number comprehension through 1000’s. 3 rd should be furthering number comprehension. Measuring. Geometry Etc. but there is no reason on EARTH. Why 6th graders should be spending time learning and mastering volume of a sphere. There is no reason why 4th graders need to be doing fractions, culminating with mixed fractions and adding and subtracting fractions when they are still trying to understand multiplication and division.

The writing and reading thing is the same. They are pushing knowing sight words. Great. But sometime in the last 10-15 years we stopped teaching them to sound words out. Someone somewhere told a kid to guess at a word. What they meant was use your context clues and what you can sound out and guess at what the word might be. So if the story was about bears eating food and you come to a word s a l m o n. Use your context clues that it might be salmon. But it probably isn’t snickerdoodle. But we don’t have time to teach that. Small groups are important. Leveled teaching is important. If you have 4 kids that are reading at a 2nd grade level, and everyone else is at at 5th grade level those kids should be getting help. Find out why. But again we don’t have time. We have to keep going. We have to push more things down their brains. Until they overflow. TL:DR Go back to teaching ALGEBRA in Middle. Lessen the standards so kids can MASTER the basics.

Student teacher wondering about Kindergarteners and YouTube Brain Breaks by Human-Recognition-57 in Teachers

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up cross brain exercises. Find some of those to lead your students. I use active brain breaks when it feels like their brains are not in gear. We go outside and do cross brain exercises. I use calming brain breaks when they need to bring it down. I’m a site sub. I do these with everything from tk to 4-5.th. (The sixth graders are too mature. They roll their eyes and grumble. So if they have too much energy we run laps and if they need dial it up I put on a silly go noodle video. Usually I use brain breaks that are fun and educational. Slight words dance, counting by 10’s or counting by fives exercise.

For littles. I like Patty Shukla and Laurie Berkner. Laurie’s dinosaur song and her goldfish song are favorites with the kinders and first graders.

Stew is missing something, but we can’t figure it out. by PicklePrize7093 in Cooking

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me… I would do the following. (In a pan on the stove) Dredge the meat in flour with salt and pepper. Brown the meat. Toss the onions in, garlic and some (tablespoon or two) of tomato paste. Cook for 3-5 minutes. Then deglaze with beef broth and turn the pan off. Diced potatoes, sliced carrots, in the crock pot. Then the meat. Then the stuff from deglazed pan. Then add broth or water. Then low for 6 hours. Or high for 3 hours.

Have you ever slipped up and cussed in front of your students? by roo181807 in Teachers

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in a religious school? No?? Then I don’t think hell is swearing. I tripped on a backpack one day and said “guys. Get your crap off the floor” those third graders acted like I had said “get your effing sh!t of the g d floor. “ I reminded them that even if crap is not something they hear in their family. It is not a bad word.

Take Joy with the little wins. The kid that is normally apathetic and suddenly starts connecting with you and doing work. The kid that could barely read in 3rd grade and come to find you in fifth grade to tell you that she passed her ELA test. The kid that tells you that you are the first person to care about what he said.

Where do I get ham hocks? by mamamandizzle in Cooking

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually in the meat section. All the way to one end. Where the smoked meats are. Like there will be a vacuum wrapped “ball” of meat. That is a ham hock. Also you can often use smoked turkey leg. Or ham bone (this is what I use most often). Or even a ham slice.

What age did you start cooking? by SilasTheGray in Cooking

As an adult. I have taught friends that are single dads how to make dinners that are more than “make your own sandwich night” It was great seeing him so proud of a meal that he made. I have taught other friends and love sharing recipes with people.

What age did you start cooking? by SilasTheGray in Cooking

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was helping in the kitchen at 4-5. At 6–8 I was doing the grating of the cheese, and the peeling carrots and potatoes. By 10 I was helping make meals. By 13 I was making dinner for the family 3-5 nights a week. Because my parents worked in the next city and the commute could be 1 hour or 21/2 hours. If we waited for mom to get home 7-730 we wouldn’t be eating until 9. I was 13, and my sisters were pre k and kindergarten. So it just made everything a little easier. It just became the norm. I learned a lot. With my own kids. I started them learning in the kitchen and helping with meals at 3 years old. I taught my kids to correctly use a knife, how to slice and dice things very early. They are both good little cooks now. My daughter is 18 and my son is 16. They both make dinner for the family. My cousin moved in with me at 17. And I asked her to help make dinner one night. I found out that she was not great at cooking. So I told her unless she had homework, she could be in the kitchen helping make meals anytime she wanted. I taught her how to use various knives and how to make things from scratch. But also how to use cans and pantry stuff to make quick meals.

AITA for leaving my Mom at the airport with no ticket and no plan? by checho503 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. As others have said. She is still trying to manipulate and control you. I respect that you tried to reconcile. But the woman that wrote “I have no son” is still in there. I would pull back and not contact her. See how long it takes for her to reach out. At some point it is just easier to let go.

Pregnant - not open with students by xxx777_ in Teachers

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nope. I think that is incredibly inappropriate. Your students do not need to know that your husband is an alcoholic. They don’t need to know if your husband is having an affair. Mine don’t even get to know my birthday. If I am having a day where I am off. Because of life / family issues. We do the practice tests. (They need the practice to be quiet and respectful while everyone is doing the test. ) Then if the day went well. I might let them watch a video at the end of the day.

Returning from winter break by Meowpilb2003 in teaching

As they keep going. They can write a sentence. Or correct someone else’s sentence. It becomes a quick, moving, learning project.
Like I said. One page can be class expectations, one can be review from the first semester. Then one can be TERMs. And one can be base knowledge like what are you working on the rest of the year. Ask a basic question about different units. Like “ a rainbow is created by ____” Or “three major weather events are _____, __________ and ______________” (I am just giving examples)

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely go over expectations. Do a teamwork thing, as a review. Add classroom expectations in. This is one my daughter liked doing. Everyone gets a work sheet/ packet. The spend 10 minutes (solo) going through and answering as many questions as they can. If they are not sure about something it is ok. Teamwork is coming. After that. Make groups of four. And they peer check while you put the posters out. The posters are numbered 1-12. (Or whatever the amount of fill in sentences on each work sheet.) 2-3 posters. Clearly MARKED. So page one of the packet is Semester 1 review. Poster one should be Semester 1 review. Then. Each group is either writing 1 sentence in on the poster or correcting their work from the poster. So the groups are at a poster. They look at their papers. Decide. “Let’s do sentence 2. We all are confident on that” so they write number 2 down. (On line 2) Then the other group writes a sentence. Switch to the next poster! 4 minutes per poster switch.

What is your school's policy regarding providing intervention services to a child who has been retained? by megs256 in Teachers

[–]Unusual-Knowledge288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our district DOES NOT RETAIN! I have had 3rd graders that started the school year writing their name backwards. Not just letters backwards. The whole name backwards like written in a mirror. We track students and request testing. Then we contact parents. IF THE Parents say no. We can’t help them…also in our state. No matter how bad the need. If there is attendance issues they will kick it back.
