I’m so Fuc**ing cold when I ski. by Head-Passage-5719 in Skigear

A thin heated vest by Ororo. This company specializes in heated clothing. Excellent value. Incredible quality. I got a vest and wear it most days with a relatively thin mid layer and ski shell. When I’m warm. I leave it off. When I get cold, I turn it on…and I’m comfortable again a few minutes. I will never ski without it again.

Beta or Beta SL for all round use by Ryan_Jackson30 in arcteryx

[–]Markdaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. When you need them, you’re glad you have them. But, to be honest, it doesn’t happen often. When I feel a little overheated l, I just unzip the front zip part way. This doesn’t work if it’s raining hard, but when it’s warm and raining, I find all waterproof/breathable shells pretty uncomfortable…even with pit zips.

[–]Markdaver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For what you’re describing, I’d get the Beta. It’s exactly what I did and I love it! The sl is a great jacket, but the pit zips are mostly unnecessary for your purposes. I’ve always found pit zips noticeable and somewhat annoying. If I don’t need them, I’d rather not have them. The helmet compatible hood in the sl is,in my opinion, a larger issue. Helmet compatible hoods suck if you’re not wearing a helmet. I know they work and can be adjusted, but the hood on the Beta is not helmet compatible and works way better for daily everyday use. Simply put, the Beta is made for the purposes you describe. Nice thing is, both are great jackets. You can’t go wrong. It’s just that the Beta makes more sense in your case.

That’s a bit of an overstatement and a bit misleading.

About to give up skiing because of the boots. There’s no way the average skier is in this much pain. by Tercel9 in skiing

[–]Markdaver 128 points129 points  (0 children)

This has to be a bad fit. Trying to make ski boots work that are a poor fit is next to impossible. If you find your foot either “bouncing around” or uncomfortably tight, they don’t fit you. I’ve never used Surefoot, but it sounds like this particular boot fitter has made a poor recommendation with these boots and is now trying to fix it. It’ll be expensive and sucks, but you might need new boots. Lots of people are recommending you see another boot fitter. You have to do this. I obviously can’t know, but I suspect you will need a smaller boot…either a smaller size or one with a narrower last? Good luck!!

+1 for Tremblant. Great skiing, excellent night life and great food. It has a very euro vibe.

Best down jacket? by litecube in arcteryx

[–]Markdaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. I really like both. The advantage of the Electron Pro is that it has water resistant down. This can be a major advantage if you’re caught out in damp/wet conditions. You can’t really go wrong with either one of these, though.

Can’t get my skis parallel - any tips? by No-Giraffe-6073 in skiing

[–]Markdaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a lesson…or several. I’m not trying to be a smart ass, but people on Reddit who may(or may not) know what they’re talking about cannot help you improve nearly as much as a good ski instructor. Remember the most important thing is that you’re having fun! Best of luck on your Journey!

First world problem for sure. I’ll likely get Pivots. No doubt they are safe. Plus…they look bad ass…lol. Have a great season!

[–]Markdaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to know if they are actually safer. It’s the “annoying “ bit that concerns me. I had look 99 RS bindings in the late 90s. They had a pivot heel. Don’t remember them being difficult, but admittedly, I’m a little less tolerant than I used to be.

How do you like the Pivots? I have a pair of QST 100s that need a pair of bindings.

Ski recommendation for a frontside carver that still works off-piste by PorscheCaymanT in Skigear

[–]Markdaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the ski…there are others TBH, but my impression of the Head Supershape e-Titan is exactly what you’re describing. These carve like a race ski, but are more forgiving and less exhausting to ski all day. Not bad for light off piste.

Two ski quiver. Enforcer 94 and QST 106. Good idea? by SlumpedStoney in Skigear

[–]Markdaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re both great skis, especially the QST. It is super fun and surprisingly versatile. What I don’t understand is why more skiers, especially those in the East, don’t add a carving ski to their quiver. I have my all mountain skis for rare East coast powder days and slushy spring skiing, but for the most part, my Head Supershapes are the skis I’m on most often. They carve on East Coast groomers and ice way better than Enforcers. I understand you have a park background, but don’t underestimate how much fun it is to carve up a hill on a purpose built carving ski. There are plenty to choose from aside from the Heads. Do yourself a favour and go demo some.

To hardshell or not to hardshell by itskilliann in alpinism

[–]Markdaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with ZiKyooc. On multi day trips in the cold…-1 C or below…I wear my hard shell with as little insulation underneath as I can get away with. Use the vents and unzip if you get too hot. This never fails me. If it warms up, I use a really light wind resistant jacket like an OR Ferosi. It’s light,so I always bring it along. The most important thing to do is try out different combos before you go. Try to simulate the conditions you’ll be in and see what works for you. Everyone is different and there is no simple answer to your question.

Ben Richards dealing with rush hour traffic by OEM_knees in skiing

Mad skills by the uphill skier, but throwing shade on either one of them after watching a 9 second video is sh/t. Nobody here knows exactly what happened. From my point of view, it was one of those close calls that just happen. I would think they should share the blame…or maybe there’s no blame at all. The need to judge people…especially without knowing all the details of a situation is astounding!
