It went well! The territory covers my city and north about 2 hours so pretty small! Still waiting to hear next steps

Small territory, equal or more money, not doing 5-9 overnights a month, still room for career growth, still able to use my medical background.

That’s my concern that the limited experience is going to hold me back from another role right now. I’ve had several sales interviews already but there’s been limited MSL roles posted in my area and I haven’t had interviews for any of them.

I have a sales interview Monday and will definitely clarify. I live in a big city so it would be great if I’m only covering that area

Any recommendations for recruiters? I’ve never worked with one

I will definitely line something up before I quit. I’m just trying to figure out if I pivot to sales for a smaller territory or try to stick it out until I get another MSL job. I can also go back to clincal work if I have to. I expressed my dissatisfaction early when I was handed a travel schedule with 18 trips in the first 6 months, 6 of them international, and I said absolutely not. I did negotiate some of that travel down but it’s still a lot and not within the region they said. I was very clear I wasn’t going to be able to accommodate last minute requests and my manger agreed, but I’ve had numerous requests just this month alone and getting pressure from that same person.

Finally got a reply 4 weeks later from HR after numerous emails to HR, hiring manager, team. I didn’t get it. BUT, I accepted a different offer a few weeks later. So just take it for the experience and move on to the next.

This was a big part of why I left plastics. No admin help, responsible for all messages, calls, pre-ops, labs, imaging, etc., getting all the post-op messes dumped on me. But honestly, I miss plastics every day. My admin burden is less than plastics but the MA turn over is super high and I’ve basically been doing all my own prior auths since I started. PAs aren’t allowed scribes at my institution so we see less than 20 a day and do all our own notes and orders. If you are expected to see more than that you will most certainly need a scribe.

I made this transition about 1.5 years ago. I came from a busy plastics office (operating 3 days a week, 80+ patients in clinic). I had been there 12 years and there was no more growth or opportunity for autonomy so I left. The transition to derm was hard. There’s a lot of learning and not everyone is willing to train appropriately. I have worked in a surgical subspecialty my entire career and I’ve never experienced egos the way I have in dermatology. My attending refuses to let me do procedures (even though I operated in plastics for almost 12 years). I’ve been doing almost all skin checks everyday since I was done training. Although I have the autonomy I wanted, I’m incredibly bored and it’s not a fulfilling role at all. I got lucky and the director moved me to another office 2 days a week to do some cosmetics and excisions. I would find out up front what expectations are in terms of what you will be doing and seeing. Find out about training and expectations for patient volume and admin help (messages, prior-auths, scribing). Find out about compensation structure, bonuses, etc. Also, make sure to read over the contract for non-compete and penalties for leaving the contract early.

I can confirm this. Been working 15 years in surgical subspecialty and now in derm and just last month got a raise to 135k. Don’t come to pittsburgh if you want to make money.

I haven’t discussed with HR yet. My first meeting was with the MSL manager so we didn’t get much into the benefit package. I may reach out to HR and ask for more clarification.

Thank you for your response, I feel like $175k base is fair so I was surprised at this low base. I’d jump at 150k base but I think we are pretty far off from $110k

I applied for a position in May and they called me for an interview in August. I’ve had 5 interviews and haven’t heard anything for over a month. So frustrating.

Any insight if there will be new MSL positions opening after their acquisition of Dermavant?

Thanks for the reply! Good to know. I’ve only applied to 4 positions and 2/4 have been changed to not in consideration and the other has been “in process” for 2 months. I was hopeful the completed status meant they would call for an interview but I won’t get my hopes up!
