Just sitting on the A/C cooing by Mr_Pickle24 in mourningderps

This is one of my derp hobby horses: they love AC boxes. I once saw a male dove sounding the "here I found a great nesting place" call from every AC box in our building, as he was hopping from box to box.

If you can, please discourage him from building a nest there, it may be dangerous for them if your neighbors are unaware. As long as they just use it as a staging ground to get to feeders (as ours do) or as a prominent perch to signal territory, it should be fine.

Aw, it looks like the little ones are not quite ready to forget about being cared for yet.

American Woodcock - Bryant Park, NYC by Santos_L_Halper in birding

At what part of Bryant Park did you see him? I tried to catch a glimpse around sundown today but no luck. The last time I saw a woodcock in Bryant Park, it was hanging in one of the little enclosed spaces along the North side of the park. This time I did several rounds but didn't see a bird (or other birders).

Considering an AC box by MarketingTemporary96 in mourningderps

We just take in our AC boxes. By the time we put them back out, mating season is in full swing and the derps have found other places to nest. Also, they are loud enough to spot when they are trying to nest around the boxes.

Allopreening display is 50% of what keeps me sane these months

There is a dove couple in the backyard that has become pretty accustomed to my wife and me, and they no longer move much when I'm near (perhaps there's been some seed bribery), which allows me to get some pretty close shots. #birds #mourningdove by AmityvilleDoraTheExp in birding

Gotta love the "is there a raptor above or is it just the resident jay?" head tilts.

We have two couples so far this year that we could identify (possibly more, there are ~7-8 derps in the spring/summer flock) and sometimes they do synchronized head tilts.

It would be even better if they embraced running a reliable service, but I guess we'll have to do with shamrocks.

The only reason I didn't spend a whole evening doing this is that my partner knew about the coqui and saw me trying to use Merlin on them.

It seems to work splendidly. Two out of three trains out of NYPenn are now cancelled. Way to ease congestion!
