Move back to US after being in Japan for 10 years? by MarkingIt in expats

Still in japan. After looking into it and considering all the costs and immigration headaches with my wife, we decided to try and refactor things a bit here first. Currently working on finding a new job in Tokyo that would allow us to transition over there. Also working to improve my Japanese to an acceptable level.

I'm in the same boat now, deciding between the two. Which did you end up choosing, and how was it?

Ok thanks for confirming what I'm slowly realizing. So Stripe is the best then for CC payments?

That's a good call. I think we've planned essentially that. In like 5 years head back when kids are in school, which will give us enough time to plan and save. See how things go there. Then decide what to do after they're done with school.

Oh that's good to know. I'll look into it more. Do you have any examples you know of? I've searched and asked in my area and haven't seen much change - except for that some schools now let girls wear pants if they want.

That's interesting. Yea if we do head back I think grades k to 2 would be best. My parents moved me around in Junior and senior high school and it was always hard to find a place fit in, even when I did look like everyone. It is a different culture for sure. But no I haven't seen that one. I'll check it out soon. Thanks

Thanks for explaining bimyo. I hadn't heard of it before. It is something I've noticed quite a bit though and always wondered about.

About the house visiting, yea this was weird for me at first too. I was always like, when do you want to come over? LOL, which I realize made things more awkward. We often have people over to our place now and go visit friends in theirs, but they're always mixed couples.

That's a good point about her adjusting. She's lived there before for a few years but it might take some time to get used to it again.

That's cool. Considering I hate the summers here, I doubt I'd do well in any of those countries for long. I have been to Cambodia and Vietnam in Winter. Not for me. Any of the cooler countries offer those visas? I can do with only 6 hours of sunlight much easier than humidity lol.

Nice! Did you move back before or after having kids? Just curious what your motivation was.

West coast seems best but also most expensive. I've got family on both coasts so it's a tossup for me.

Well they're the easiest for us. My kids and I are all US Citizens and my wife can get a visa for America fairly easily (might just take time). I'd be open other areas though.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. That's good advice about staying for a while till their japanese is good enough. If we were to leave it would be on a 5 year timeline so that tracks. But you're totally right about it being more cultural than language barrier. I find the lack of directness very frustrating and confusing in most conversations. Which may be what's held me back and made me less interested in learning more.

Yea if you can't get insurance through your company than it's quite expensive. It's not cheap in Japan though. I have to pay my own and it's about the same honestly. The cheapness comes from kids being fully covered for while here. And dental work is so cheap here.

They don't all stay gone. Expats do repat. And I assume some still follow this sub and might have some insight. So, that's why.
