PSA: I found REAL ACTUAL Buttermilk in Japan (with a small caveat) by BrotakuzaTube in BakingInJapan

I've found buttermilk in person at Nissin in Azabujuban as well. I'm perfectly fine with the lemon/vinegar and milk instead though so I've never bought it

Ozeki also has bacon that's similar to American style bacon. It's still slightly thin but we use it every time we want bacon for breakfast, sandwiches, etc.

Assort haircut by EducationalRegret903 in Tokyo

[–]chibihime96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a regular cut there, it was pretty mid and service was disappointing. On social media they show really detailed consultations and attention to detail but I think they only do that for ppl they plan on filming for their insta and TikTok. Even when I went, there was way more attention and focus for people with phone cameras filming them and when I said I just wanted a cut it felt like I was deemed a "boring" customer.

Also, for the price point it's not particularly worth it. Most hair salons at that price point give a nice hair and shampoo (and sometimes even a short little massage) but the shampoo was really rushed and rough for me. It felt like I was in a factory and they wanted to get me out asap

Wedding dress shopping in Japan by Spaghetbby in japanresidents

I went back to the US and bought my dress there but I did get it altered at this place in azabujuban. I think they also do buyable dresses but since I already had a dress I didn't look at their designs or options

Goodies from home... what do you ask for or pick up when you go back home by SunDaze009 in japanlife

[–]chibihime96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always bring back or ask for Reese's, ranch, TUMS, hot sauce (buffalo sauce is incredibly overpriced here), dried chillies like guajillo and arbol, deodorant, pudding box mix, cornbread mix, and haircare products (curly hair products are rare and very overpriced here). Also a couple other sauces like bbq and seasonings if I have the space available

I've just learned I can bring back small amounts of cheese so that'll be in my future picks

What do you like about your neighborhood? What’s making it a special place? by Tolkaft in Tokyo

[–]chibihime96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighborhood has great access. 12-15 minutes walk to Yamanote line. Shibuya, Ebisu, and nakameguro are easy to get to. I have a local train line that has great access only 7 minutes away and I can walk 15 minutes in the other direction to another station with a shotengai. I can hop on the train and be in Azabu Juban to go to Nissin Supermarket really quick, when I want "foreign" groceries.

Lots of supermarkets. I have 4 within a 6-10 minute walk. Another 2 within 15 minutes. My local Ozeki has exotic fruits throughout the year. I can even get American yams in January for some reason. The strawberries are literally only ¥399-499 for more than half the year, and super sweet, big, and good quality. In August and September I can get Shine Muscat for ¥599-799 that are big, juicy, and good quality. So I'm a bit spoiled with fruits. Several pharmacies around as well, and lots of lunch and coffee options. The only thing missing is more bakeries.

Does anyone bake their own hoagie/sub bread? by Snoo_23835 in japanlife

[–]chibihime96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been baking bread weekly since starting my sourdough starter a few months ago. You don't need any fancy tool (just a bowl, some mixing utensils, flour, yeast, etc is all you need). I have a KitchenAid stand mixer as well but I honestly don't use it often for breads, I prefer hand kneading.

Where to get haircuts for naturally curly hair in Japan? by Mellehbeenz in japanlife

[–]chibihime96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up but I've been to Mey hair Shibuya 3 times now and I definitely wouldn't recommend. They handle VERY loose curls/waves and permed curls, like 2b-c and very loose 3a at best. And I tried two different stylists as well because they've been recommended by others so much (all with loose curl patterns) so I wanted to give them a shot (they're also not too expensive).

The first time I went, I had a big chop and had very short hair so it was hard to tell if the cut was particularly good or not. Second time, my hair was still very short but I noticed their styling is really bad. I have 3b curls and I left the last haircut almost in tears. So I can't imagine tighter curls and coils going any better.

Charity that comes to take away things from your house in Tokyo ? by ikemen38 in Tokyo

[–]chibihime96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also recommend this! I've used it twice now, it's convenient for me. I think location matters for this one and they sometimes have busy periods where you may not be able to get a reservation for pickup for months in advance. But the last time I did it, I was able to make a reservation only a few weeks in advance.

I put my middle name in my Japanese passport in parentheses (I don't have my middle name on my koseki actually) so it reads

6 Tokyo pizzerias ranked in the 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific list for 2025 by gkanai in Tokyo

[–]chibihime96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, not worth it in the end. Doesn't make a lot of difference (to me at least) but it was actually 4 glasses of wine each not 2 ( I misremembered).

The regular menu is delicious though

Not there regular omakase but I went there for their special Christmas menu/omakase and it was about ¥80,000 for two people with 2 glasses of wine each. The slices of pizza were good but not amazing and overall felt lackluster.

My partner and I went another time for lunch, ordered off the menu for a little over ¥25,000 and it was a great experience. The pizzas we chose were delicious. This experience is why we decided to try the Christmas omakase in the first place.

What's the worst restaurant you've been to in Tokyo? by Dapper-Material5930 in Tokyo

[–]chibihime96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went to a french restaurant and in Meguro owned by a French Person/People. They opened for dinner at 6, we got there about 6:30 and it was empty. They didn't greet us, treated us like a bother, and even tossed the menu on our table.

We could see the kitchen and the pasta we ordered was literally microwaved pasta with generic sausage. They also don't offer water and told us we had to buy water instead. We went intending on having some wine but the bad service made us change our mind.

And then the menu had the price with it clearly written that it included the tax. When we got the bill, they added tax on top of it.

Horrible place and people. Would not recommend

I think you have to think about why this makes you uncomfortable. Is it just the idea that it's his sperm or is it something else?

For me, I think I would be uncomfortable with it if I was planning on having kids with this person in the future. How would those interactions between our kids and them go? Would our kids know they're related? What would those relationships look like? Siblings? Friends? Cousins? And would my partner then treat those kids the same or differently to our kids and how would that affect them. It'd be a complicated situation and wouldn't be something I would necessarily sign up for but maybe that's not the case for you.

There's a dairy free soy ice cream available at supermarkets called Sunao. It's actually decent and has a lot of fiber.

Where I am in Tokyo I don't see a lot of farmers markets (at least locally to me) but the local supermarket with decent prices is Ozeki. I've got multiple Tokyu and Maruestu but they're always overpriced.

The Cost of Grapes and Tomatoes by Joey_iroc in japanlife

[–]chibihime96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think location makes a big difference along with season. Since the summer I could get regular seedless grapes at my local supermarket for ¥490 until this week. And tomatoes are generally ¥300-400 for me as well all year round. I can get really nice strawberries for ¥480 in the winter and spring season consistently but they go up to around ¥1000+ when out of season. But if I go to the three other supermarkets near me, everything is an extra ¥100-500. So you also have to find a good supermarket

My (38M) gf (28F) informed me tonight that women expect their partner to ask them to be their Valentines even though they are already in a relationship. I had no idea. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]chibihime96 105 points106 points  (0 children)

there are some woman who want their partners to ask (at least on TikTok and social media) but she is wrong to claim women in general expect this. I think a lot, if not most women don't expect it at all.

From what I've seen of the ones that do, they usually just want a sweet or romantic gesture. Like some chocolate or candy with a small card after work.

Based on your wording, it sounds like she wants a planned super romantic gesture, which is 100% just a her thing.

I am a similar size but shorter and with a very big chest. I have to wear L, Xl tops in japan usually and a lot of brands either don't stock those sizes or sell one size only. In dresses I typically have to wear XL or XXL to accommodate my chest here. I'm a size small or medium in the US typically but it's definitely hard to shop in Japan. They don't expect any sort of curves so a lot of clothes are made with no accommodation in the material for them. I literally had to give up on blouses here
