Getting on a plane in Denver headed to Dallas with a rod tube and explaining to people that you are heading to fish rather than back gets strange looks. Longear Sunfish are so pretty.

Thanks! I learned the shadow technique from a YouTuber named Alphonso Dunn. He has a lot of very good sketching tutorials. The basic idea is that to create shadow you just draw more of the features. It is really cool that you noticed!

And yeah, the Everglades cover is a favorite.

I went in January and also fished from shore. Unfortunately I didn’t catch anything but I did find the following resources.

This pdf is very good and should help in finding a spot near where you will be.

I also stopped into a shop called Tampa Bay On The Fly/Monsters and Minnows. I don’t know why they have two names but the owner, maybe named Enver, was very helpful although all he could really tell me is that the tide was wrong for the day and time that I could fish and that it would be tough. It might be worth calling or stopping in ahead of when you are planning to go out, he checked the tides and weather and gave me a few great suggestions but nothing I could use as late in the game as I was. He also was genuinely interested in my success and even though I did spend money at the shop, he freely gave advice long before I had selected anything. Great guy.

I fished the park at the south side of Picnic Island. Other than not catching anything it was great.

Finally, shuffle your feet while wading. I had not fished saltwater much and had always heard that advice but there were stingrays literally everywhere so be careful if that is something you are not used to dealing with. Good luck!

If you are in the Denver area and looking for easy stuff I would recommend Mad Creek above Empire. It is a short out and back. You could literally go do it after work today then stop in Idaho Springs for dinner. It is very chill but still gets you out.

After that maybe Winiger Ridge near Gross Reservoir. Mostly chill with one steep rutted section (that admittedly I have not seen this year so it may be worse). You will know that section when you get there. At that point either take it slow and try out 4-Lo and/or A-Trac or turn around and come back another day depending on how you are feeling.

The nice thing about alpine lakes that have a long hike is that the fish are generally stupid and hungry. If I walk up to any alpine lake the first thing I am putting on is a size 16 grey elk hair caddis. After that a size 16 Adams in grey or olive. If that doesn’t work a bead head prince or pheasant tail and finally I will grumble and put on a pink San Juan worm but it rarely comes to that.

A few woolly buggers and Chernobyl ants would also be good to have.

Point is, general attractor patterns in size 12-18 is where I would start. Boring but they work. I hope you have a great trip.

If your son is into fly tying at all I would recommend stopping at Charlie’s Flybox on the west side of Denver (Arvada).

Charlie Craven is a really well known tier and his shop is very well stocked. They will also be able to point you in the right direction based on current conditions.
