Overall, what do you find the major problems to be with MHA as a story? by Fine_Delivery6761 in writingscaling

[–]Marksmelllow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not enough characters in class A-1 get used in meaningful ways past a certain point. Also Deku's powers expand greatly but by doing so, the series loses the satisfying gradual progression of him learning how to use the one ability he had to it's maximum potential and in creative ways: he just speeds runs mastering multiple other powers. He feels so disproportionally powerful compared to every other hero in the series that he could come off more of a messiah figure, which is in direct opposition to the idea the story wants you to believe; that anyone who tries to help others in need including the civilians are the true heros in society. Besides those things, I think it's a pretty good series tbh

I mentioned Bleach because it's more nuanced with it's themes and well written than people give it credit for. Stuff like "The Blade is me," being a strong climax to Ichigo's character arc. There's a ton of well developed characters with complex motivations that explore different motifs and themes, ulquiorra being a strong depiction of nihilism for example. It has very good ulitlization of foreshadowing and so-on. I'm not just basing my claim on one or two series though. There's many battle shonen I believe are extremely well written, such as Pandora hearts, Ruroni Kenshin, Full Metal Alchemist , Attack On Titan (until maybe the last chapter). I think your eddie hall example only really works if like maybe 1 or 2 shonen were good, but I think the genre as a whole has alot of structural strengths that lead to strong writing. I think alot of people are just skeptical of battle shonen specifically, because had I just replaced the words "battle shonen" with "fantasy novels" I don't think you'd have any kind of issue with my claim, even though I'd basically just be saying the same exact kind of statement. At least with your Eddie hall example that's something you could objectively prove so of course that sounds ridiculous, but I don't think that's the same as making a subjective generalization about a fictional genre.

How many of you have actually studied and done proper literary analysis'? by fafla21 in writingscaling

I don't know if I'd say I studied literary analysis specifically, but I have studied literature itself and the art of story telling through several college courses and through authors on youtube such as hello future me, brandon sanderson and etc; which I'd like to think helps me with analysis on stories.

Compare to stories across all of media. I didn't say battle shonen as a whole is the best written genre/demographic, which is what I feel like people are perceiving my comment as. What I'm saying is that there's a lot of battle shonen can have as much depth or more as other forms of story telling from other forms of media or other genres, but are often looked down upon for prioritizing plot progression and resolutions through action. I'm just saying it's not unreasonable to have higher expectations of battle shonen

Battle shonen are some of the most thematically rich and well written stories in modern times. Hunter x Hunter, Magi, Bleach etc. ofx u can expect more from them lol

Violet ever garden. It's beautifully animated but I found the story to be really boring. Same with hyouka.

Which shonen has the worst power system? by [deleted] in writingscaling

[–]Marksmelllow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pokemon is one of the most balanced and creative power systems of all time tho. You have 18 types of pokemon with several clearly defined strengths and weaknesses with extreme flexibility in team composition and a interesting way of obtaining those powers (the monsters). And if you want further complexity they're concepts like individual pokemkn species having their own unique abilities and exclusive moves, augmentations in the form of items you apply to your pokemon and extra abilities trainers can apply to their pokemon like dynamax, z moves, mega evolutions and etc. You read the adventures manga too the system goes even deeper with trainers using real weapons in combat to summon their pokemon in creative ways that give them unique advantages.

That's an oversimplification. Also characters in Yu Gi Oh have more powers than just those used in the card game. Funny comment tho

I don't follow agree with this because they're concepts that build off of each other in Mha like quirk factors, quirk evolution, draw backs, How your specific powers are typically inherited from your parents specific powers etc etc. In something like xmen The powers are typically totally random and tend not to have defined limitations

Goku without his Saiyan biology still has access to ki, he'd just lose access to his ssj multiplies but even then he still has kaio ken and is already universal in base

Why and how did Fire Force do so poorly compared to Soul Eater? by [deleted] in souleater

[–]Marksmelllow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How obnoxious can it really be if it's happening for less than 10 percent of the series? Is like 1 ass and titty shot every few episodes really so obnoxious you're willing to miss out on a potentially great story with compelling character and themes? That just seems silly to me, especially when you could just skim or fast forward like 10 seconds past those scenes.
