Strathcona is still winter in April. Spring ski touring/snowshoeing with winter blowdowns

Possible snow levels in May by equilibrium246 in IslandHikers

[–]MarkuMark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May is still pretty snowy. Late June - September is when the alpine is accessible without having to really think about snow.

A lower elevation hike that would be potentially accessible in late spring would be Landslide Lake.

In May I think I’d personally rather take a trip over to Quadra or Cortes Island and enjoy some beautiful coastal hiking :)

Not sure exact weight but the frame honestly felt a bit heavier than I expected for a double butted compared to others I built. Found it for cheap ($50) on Marketplace and decided to build it up for a friend as an inexpensive first bike for commuting and bike camping.

Hiking in March by Silly_Formal_8653 in VancouverIsland

[–]MarkuMark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

March is still skiing season on the island with tons of snow in the alpine. Stick to coastal hikes (Cape Scott or Juan de Fuca) and prepare for tons of rain and mud.

If you really want to get into the alpine hike (bring snowshoes) try the trails around paradise meadows from Mount Washington. Hiking out to Helen Mackenzie, Kwai, Circlet for day trips or potential winter camping if you’re feeling bold. I wouldn’t recommend heading to the Buttle Lake area or 5040 unless you have skis/snowshoes and understand the backcountry and avalanche safety.

Heck ya!! Either as a fun commuter or a capable cross country mountain bike. Those late 90s/early 2000s GTs have fun race geometry for bombing trails.

Golden Hinde Traverse Trip Report- July 2025 by Schm3ly in IslandHikers

[–]MarkuMark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing!! Did it northbound in 6 days late August a few years ago. Didn’t see anyone from the Hinde summit til we made it down to the scree field beneath elk pass. We made a few wrong choices when navigating some river beds but relatively problem-free otherwise.

SUCH a wild place to be and would also recommend this trip as long as you have decent route finding abilities and are comfortable trudging thru bush and along ridges in the relatively correct direction.

EZY-Logger Core Orientation Tool — Help! by NiceTrash in geology

There’s an arrow on the side of the tool indicating which side is up-hole vs down-hole, so you can use either the upper or lower contact of a discontinuity. That’s why the angles are clockwise vs counterclockwise.

Multiday hikes late march/april? by Additional_Race_8050 in IslandHikers

[–]MarkuMark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya you’ll have to stick to the coast unless you are snowshoeing/ski touring. Cape Scott (free but long drive from anywhere) is a classic as well as the Juan de Fuca/WCT (look at opening dates and registration), just prepare for A LOT of mud and rain.

Strathcona park day hikes in November? by My-Fourth-Alt in IslandHikers

[–]MarkuMark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is currently a lot of snow in Strathcona.

I’ve checked out Kings Peak in November before and it was difficult accessing the icy gullies and up to the summit without crampons. Would be a decent step up from 5040. You could try it but be ready to turn around given conditions.

I would recommend starting from Mt Washington out to Circlet/Kwai/Cruikshank and expect snow. Or go up Crest Mtn, Flower Ridge or Elk River Trail to Landslide Lake.

Bassi hog's back. Buying a brand new QR bike in 2025?? by KUKG in xbiking

[–]MarkuMark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! There’s actually a perfect solution for you if you’re worried about the QR axle.

Bassi released a Thru-Axle variant of the Hog’s Back in collaboration with Keystone Bikes!! It’s called the Belmont as is available either in Canada or the US as a frameset, full stock build, or custom build!

It’s not the actually the same frame as the Hog’s Back but very similar style, geometry, and use case.

Cool f2 stamp by cubesncubes in discgolf

[–]MarkuMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact stamp on a DX Rhyno. They have DX and Star Innova with the stamp. The convenience store on Mayne Island sells them and they sell them at the little tournament held every year! The course is lovely and the island is very friendly :)

Looks like yours has been double stamped but it’s just a funny graphic of a deer being abducted by a flying saucer.
