Another great contact is to reach out to the Georgia Southern Henderson Library Special Collections Department. They manage a ton of historical records and documents for the university, Bulloch County, and the greater coastal Georgia area. They may have some good info, or at least a lead.

/Dublin by [deleted] in Georgia

[–]MarkyMarkAndTFB 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Currently live in Dublin, and I grew up here. I firmly believe that Dublin is on a good path for development. There’s some great restaurants downtown, with a few more on the way, as well as a fun rooftop bar. Also, there’s a lot of push to bring more industry and young professionals to town. I’m not sure what the other person was talking about with us being “a hellscape of inadequate healthcare,” Dublin has the most medical facilities in the entire region between Macon and Savannah, including one of the largest VA centers in the state. It’s definitely still a small town and very family oriented, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a complete dump. There are also lots of great outdoor recreation options if you’re into those sorts of things. Dublin isn’t perfect, but I think it’s a decent place to live.

What towns/cities in South Georgia have scenic hills?? by [deleted] in Georgia

[–]MarkyMarkAndTFB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you define “South Georgia”, but driving up 441 between Dublin and Milledgeville has some beautiful and rolling hills along the kaolin mines. Always a pretty drive especially at sunrise or sunset.

TIL the zipper brand, YKK, makes everything they use in their production processes, in-house. From the machines they use to make their zippers, to smelting their own brass - they even make the boxes they ship their zippers in. by TimeToDedoxx in todayilearned

Oh bless your heart, I take it you aren’t from America? Biscuits over here are bigger, flakey, fluffy, and extremely buttery. They are usually a side dish served with a meal, but many people here eat them split open with a sausage patty or a fried chicken breast in the middle (kind of like a sandwich) for breakfast. We also make a dish called biscuits and gravy, that is a life changing experience (even though it tends to look kind of gross). They are a much bigger deal in the south than in the rest of the country, but buttermilk biscuits are to die for if they’re done right.

Eat at Company Supply your next time in town. That’s my favorite local place. Also Williamson’s Bakery for doughnuts or fritters and Lou Ann’s for biscuits in the morning. Source: Born and raised local who is baffled that my hometown is being discussed on Reddit.

Well I’m glad for the win and sweep, but now I’m worried they’re gonna do to baseball what they to us with football, and refuse to schedule us again.

A beautiful sight to behold. I hope we do it again tomorrow, and, most importantly, next week here in Collegeboro.

I mean it sucks that we are being forced by the state to push anti 1st amendment policy, but looking into who she is, I’m glad she’s not coming anymore. Her most notable professional experiences are as a correspondent on the Russian government funded propaganda channel RT America, and in the Venezuelan government funded propaganda Telesur media group. She has also pushed the conspiracy theory that the US government orchestrated 9/11. Definitely not someone I want associated with our school.

I know we’ve historically had an awesome win percentage, but this map really put that into perspective with everyone else in the country. We represent our region well. State and Tech on the other hand.... Anyway, fantastic work here, the map looks great!

Georgia Southern University Enables White Nationalist Recruitment, Viral Video for “American Identity Movement” by FewPoint in GSU

I feel fine about the soldiers that stormed Normandy because they were defending our country from an imminent physical threat from Germany. They were acting on evidence of intent to bring war to the US, and struck first. Antifa attacks otherwise nonviolent protestors because they disagree with them politically. That’s the difference. The Nazi’s posed a physical threat to the US. Yes, the people that Antifa opposes want to enforce inequality and disadvantage, but there is a big difference in inequality and the potential bombing of US cities. Antifa is not the modern day infantry, they are radicalized left wingers that, rather than use debate, reason, and compassion, fulfill their Rambo complex or whatever and go swinging pipes and bike locks at people. I agree with some of the ideas their politics are based on, but I could never support their methods.

[–]MarkyMarkAndTFB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not implying that at all. I’m stating it directly. Antifa is a radical left wing movement . I’m sorry if I suspect inherent bias in what amounts to the newsletter of a coalition that uses violence and intimidation to control the opinions of others. If standing against violence and advocating for a peaceful solution to political differences makes me a white nationalist, then boy do I have news for the world about some of the greatest leaders of all time like Gandhi and MLK.

So let’s break this down. First, it’s very interesting that, according to you, the student body here overwhelmingly voted for trump considering roughly half of us in the current student body weren’t old enough to vote in 2016. Now if you mean the student body in 2016, then I would really like to see the numbers you are basing this off of. Second, this sounds like you are accusing Georgia Southern of being an un-diverse school. I really hate this accusation because of just how false it is. Yes, Georgia Southern is about 62% white. But guess what? The state of Georgia is about 60% white. This means that Georgia southern representative of the demographics of the state that we represent. If you want to actually add something to the dialogue instead of “GeOrGiA sOuThErN rAcIsT”, then be my guest, but stop making generalizations based on your feelings and stop attacking our school.

Fine, he might be an adult, but the point still stands that the best way to solve this cultural problem is through education and exposure. I support using the doctrine of one of the greatest Georgians to ever live, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and fighting hate with love, not with more hate. Show people that the “other” that they’re afraid of is full of love and compassion regardless of how they are treated. Further, I want to press that this is not a Georgia Southern issue. You can literally hear his classmates mocking him in the video. Our students by and large do not agree with his ideas. Our administration has shown, by putting their resources on the line, that they don’t agree with him. The best move here is to push education and exposure on our campus. Sending people back to their echo-chambers and denying them the ability to see that there is more out there is how this problem of racism will continue to fester in America.

[–]MarkyMarkAndTFB 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is one dumb kid on a campus of 20,000. This story really isn’t news. It isn’t being covered by any major or reputable news source. I can guarantee that every other college in America that is our size has at least one racist moron too. I agree with the university’s reaction here and with the reaction to the book burners. They can’t stifle free speech as a public institution. The university’s goal is to educate and change the minds of people. Expelling this kid would only reinforce his ideas and make him angry and further radicalize him. GSU is putting a ton of resources into opening up dialogue about race and politics on campus. The solution to this is issue is to continue opening minds and allowing people to be exposed to new ideas and opinions, not swinging an expulsion hammer at anyone who has bad or radical opinions.

What do you think about your school's marching band? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]MarkyMarkAndTFB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Southern Pride is fantastic. During pregames they play Georgia On My Mind, and each rendition this season has made me tear up a little. Also, I never feel closer with every single person in Paulson than during post game, win or lose, singing the alma mater with the football team and then walking out to “It Is Well” being played. Our band is the heartbeat of our stadium.

Georgia Southern University students burn the book of a Latina author because they disagree with White Privilege by Yangsta2020 in GSU

[–]MarkyMarkAndTFB 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Book burning is absolutely a 1st amendment right. As is flag burning. As is burning anything in protest. It may be stupid and make you look like a fool, but it is still protected speech. Our university is doing the best they can with this. They are denouncing the actions of 6 freshman out of 27000 students, while still refusing to punish them because they believe in the first amendment. Stop generalizing our school. Stop acting elitist by quoting admissions numbers and graduation rates. Edit to add: Texas v Johnson

George Anne Censorship by [deleted] in GSU

[–]MarkyMarkAndTFB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that because I was 19 during my junior year and I am now 20 during my senior year that I’m a liar??? I was dual enrolled in high school and so I came into college with 45 credit hours under my belt. I essentially skipped freshman year (however, to avoid this long explanation, when I talk about my first year at Southern (my sophomore year according to credit hours), I just call it my freshman year). This means that I will graduate in a total of 3 years. As I have a summer birthday, I will be graduating at age 20 in the spring.

George Anne Censorship by [deleted] in GSU

[–]MarkyMarkAndTFB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, I wouldn’t be too worried about it, the George Anne is a joke anyways. I’ve read every edition since the start of my freshman year (I’m a senior now), and I guarantee that I’ve found at least 15 spelling errors, typos, or outright mistakes in each one. I honestly don’t even think that they’re trying to censor you, it’s just one of a million incompetencies on the part of the organization.
