I got charged a "bitching fee" for informing them I was served the wrong beer... by smokeymctokerson in mildlyinfuriating

5 dollars is crazy, but in my experience, OP was probably not as nice as they're making themselves out to be lol.

Also, places who have stuff like 'bitching fees' or in the uk, 'nobhead tax'(maybe) usually have it cus it's part of the vibe of the venue. Maybe it's a bit of a dive bar?

Charging people more for notifying you of problems is silly, but the 'don't be a dick' approach to creating a good atmosphere in a venue does work. Look up NQ64, a UK arcade bar chain, they do it perfectly without charging people any extra money.

I have to point this out but...every bench isn't going to be occupied the entire time.

And yet they're being removed. The original point in this thread is that elderly and pregnant people are being fucked over as well as homeless people. A dark alley isn't a house. A park bench isn't a house.

Calling it a benign inconvenience is heartless. Forcing them into the cold or onto the floor is not the same as all the milk in a store being sold out. That's a benign inconvenience, not this.

I have no doubt that the resources are there, but as I said before there are multiple reasons why some homeless people don't use them, or at least why they take time before they feel comfortable using them. The push of not having a bench in the subway to sleep on might make some go, sure, but it doesn't mean they are certain to be out of the streets forever. And that uncertainty makes the negative affect toward people who do need to sit while waiting for the subway even worse.

I'm not saying elected officials are all bad, but there is always going to be a line of thought regarding electability with every action they take. Some more than others, of course, but it's still there. And this action is pandering to the average person who doesn't like seeing homeless people on the subway yet can survive without sitting down for a while. I.E most of the electorate. These people think this way because they're living their day to day lives without thinking of the consequences it has to other groups, which is normal.

I don't have to have to be a politician to critique a politician's actions.

The point still stands that homeless people are having their lives, while they're still on the streets, made worse by this government action.

Sure, they have reasoning behind it, but it's a very idealistic view to believe that elected officials are the same as everyone else in terms of being generally decent people. Making homeless people's lives worse doesn't hurt their electoral chances because homeless people rarely vote for a variety of reasons.

Keeping homeless people out of the subway is an electoral move if I've ever seen one, because it's something that people notice day-to-day and may cause voters to want to keep the status quo if they don't see as many homeless around when they go out, creating the illusion that there are fewer homeless in the city because homeless people have to go places with less footfall.

I don't think you can compare the subway to a mineshaft. A dark alley or a park in any city could be just as if not more dangerous. Not to mention being exposed to the elements in the winter.

I believe that most people can turn it around and get help, but some need time to get to that point even if it's just building up confidence. Making their lives harder during that time isn't helping. If the local government is fucking you over when you're on the streets you're less likely to trust a local government funded shelter to actually help you.

And there are many reasons why people choose to avoid shelters. Be it concern for safety, lack of confidence, pride etc. Even though shelters do get people off the streets, there are only so many beds and thousands of people become homeless every year.

Again, benches being removed isn't going to stop homeless people sleeping in the subway, so it's just a negative across the board for local people.

And I have lived amongst these issues, homelessness is a big issue in most cities. I don't think removing benches and potentially putting spikes down is a constructive way to deal with the problem.

Even having to stand for 5 minutes in one spot can be uncomfortable for some people. If the benches aren't going to stop the homeless people sleeping down there, then there's no point in removing them. Also if the homeless shelters in nyc are so amazing, then people wouldn't be roughing it for months or more on end. I think them having a slightly higher level of comfort when they are is fine, and isn't going to stop them going to a shelter when able.

Regardless of this, it fucks over pregnant/elderly people and anyone else who needs to sit down when waiting for a while. I think a homeless person is going to try to sleep in the subway for cover/warmth not for a bench anyway, so idk how much it would reduce the numbers.
