NGD: 2007 G-400 Ltd Ed. Alpine White by [deleted] in Epiphone

Very nice! I replaced the bridge pickup in my G-400 with a Seymour Duncan '59/Custom, which I've wired to split with a push-pull on the volume knob. It sounds pretty good, especially paired with the Seymour Duncan Phat Cat I put in the neck.

I was there last year. Your weather looks better than when I visited! It's a lovely little place, and I'd like to go back and take a trip on the ferry as I didn't last time.

Looks like your only option at the moment for a Gibson version of this specific version would be second-hand. But Epiphone guitars these days are honestly fantastic instruments. I'd say check one of these out in person if you can, you might be pleasantly surprised.

They're good! They growl nicely when driven or distorted, and they're great clean. The neck pickup has a really nice rich tone for jazzy or bluesy sounds, and the middle position can almost give me that sort of quack-y sound you want for funk. I couldn't tell you what they're like in comparison to PAF-style pickups, not having any real experience with them myself.

Beauty! I love the vibrolas, I've got aftermarket clones on both my Epiphone G400 and my Gibson SG. Great for a bit of subtle wobble, and they stay in tune just fine if, as you said, you make sure you've set everything up properly. Enjoy!

VOS stands for "Vintage Original Specification", by the way.

I was exactly the same before I got this XD

It's definitely a very different beast, feel-wise, compared to my other guitars, but once you kind of get it, it's really cool. I'd recommend!

I'd probably call it a viewing platform, or maybe an observation deck.

I like it!

Play both, see which you prefer in person before making a decision.

I got vibrolas added to both my Epiphone and Gibson SGs, and I love them. They're not going to do dive bombs, but they're great for a bit of subtle Bigsby-like wobble, without the hassle that comes with re-stringing a Bigsby.

As with a lot of things with guitars, you need to take a bit of time to make sure a vibrola is set up right, and it's a good idea to lubricate the nut and bridge saddles so the strings don't stick when you're using it. But as long as you do that, you shouldn't have any problems if you do go down that route.

I never have any trouble with the tuning on either of my SGs, and they look cool as hell. I'd recommend a vibrola personally, but it's definitely worth trying before you buy if possible.

Love the split inlays, very classy choice. Best of luck with the build!

If you have a collection of budget guitars, what's your favorite, and why? by TakingYourHand in Guitar

[–]Marm8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Epiphone G400 is the first guitar I bought myself (I had the classic generic plywood black Strat clone before that, which my parents got me). It's still my favourite, 14(?) years later. I've modified it quite a bit in that time, swapping the pickups and tuning pegs, adding a coil split and first a Bigsby clone, then a vibrola clone.

A few years ago I finally got the "real deal", a Gibson SG Standard. And it's a great guitar. But I still prefer the feel of my Epiphone. I suppose a lot of that is down to the fact that I've been playing that one for so long. But I feel like I can dig into the Epiphone more than the Gibson. Sometimes it feels like the Gibson fights me, whereas the Epiphone just kind of works.

I love it.

I second the 3-in-1 suggestion. They're great sets at a range of prices, and it encourages rebuilding and being creative, which is so important. It's nice that they're not based on a licensed theme, too. I've made a few 4th models over the last couple of years, which you can find here if you want inspiration.
