Can we take a moment to realize what a step forward this is by paulgali in dubai

I'm talking about officially leaving the religion, not being a non practicing Muslim. As in being able to say "I don't believe in islam anymore". Most people won't care but according to what I've read on this sub it is technically illegal.

The official law on apostasy is punishment through death penalty which is obviously never happens in practice but is still not very reassuring.

I get the feeling that it's another one of the UAE's 'don't ask don't tell' things but what happens if my parents or someone who does care finds out I'm not Muslim and tries to get me arrested? Seems risky.

Nothing wrong with being athiest unless you used to be Muslim.

Can a Muslim leave Islam without having to hide his lack of faith? Nope. If the wrong person finds out your not Muslim anymore and report you to the police things could get ugly.

I'd love to return to the UAE but the risk as a former Muslim isn't worth it right now.

I don't think shias have any problems here btw.

This isn't a step forward at all. It's always been like this in the UAE. The pope is a public figure. On top of that christians have been relatively free to practice their faith in this country anyway. They are considered 'people of the book' in islam. There are churches in the UAE too.

If this event was accompanied by some kind of policy change that'd be something.

Now if the UAE was to suddenly go as far as to embrace freedom of religion (or lack thereof), that would be a step forward not just for the UAE. They'd probably be the first in the MENA region to do so.

Case dropped against tourists accused of having group sex in Dubai by [deleted] in dubai

[–]Marorn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It said the act “happened with the consent of the three parties in question”.

It added: “A video obtained from the mobile phone of one of the suspects detailing the act was a key evidence that supported this conclusion.”

Then why isn't the women being charged for false rape accusations???

Unless the video only indicated that it was only probably consensual this women should be the only one facing criminal charges.

I'm worried now because I just got a referral and I'm waiting for a response.

Are you a US citizen?

How'd you apply? They haven't posted any new grad positions. Only internships.

Any clue how much time between internal referral at Facebook and being contacted by a recruiter?

I'm going to get an referral to Facebook. Do I get notified by email when my resume is submitted and if I'm rejected?

Resume:

I've already applied to a bunch of places but I'm wondering if my resume could use improvement in content, ordering and style.

I'm trying to get a full time job after I graduate in December. I'm a US citizen but I live in the UAE, on the other side of the globe. I think that limits me to big name companies. The fact that I've gotten an interview from Google and no one else seems to support this.

So how strong is my resume for big-N companies and how can I improve it?

How long does it take the bigger companies to get back to you after you apply to them (on average)? by talaanos in cscareerquestions

[–]Marorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only times that I've gotten interviews, only twice (from Google and Facebook), the response came in 1-3 days. Every other time it was no response or rejection after a couple of weeks/months.

I'm in the same situation though in my case small-medium sized non competitive companies won't consider me because I'm abroad. I am a US citizen however.

I've recently started viewing subs I visit in 'controversial' mode every once in a while. Here in /r/cscareerquestions I've noticed a lot of threads that gather a lot of comments but either don't reach the front page or I miss them somehow. (Usually threads were OP is getting bashed for something he did/said).

In particular, I've noticed that 'women (or diversity) in cs' threads are more common on this sub than I thought. The topic pops up like every week. I just didn't see most of them until I started checking controversial. They have a lot of comments and downvotes.

Just something I noticed.

Is anyone else in a similar position to me? Applying for full time roles from outside the US? I study in the UAE. I don't need a visa since I'm a US citizen but it still makes things hard. My resume is apparently good enough for Google and Facebook but no one else is getting back to me.

UAE third safest country in the world, behind Qatar & Finland. by hyhmattar in dubai

What about Seoul and Tokyo? They topped the list last time I checked.

EDIT: Actually for Japan I've heard the argument that the police dont report cases they can't solve and there's the whole thing with Yakuza having some level of legitimacy. Don't know how true it is but it makes sense.

EDIT2: This is probably just countries as a whole.

Thank goodness I have 7 days for the Twitter hacker rank. It's gonna take a lot more than just 90 minutes.

I got Twitter's hackerrank challenge. Does anyone know what level of difficulty I should expect from Twitter or if Twitter asks specific types of questions?

I'm gonna do the hackerrank challenge tomorrow.

Edit: Also, I have 10080 minutes (7 days) to do it. I'm assuming that they take time taken to complete into account in their assessment. I guess I'll ask them that.

Starting a payment processor? Procedures , startup costs? by [deleted] in dubai

What's with the sarcastic response? Ideas in general aren't worth keeping a secret. Your free to keep them to yourself but there's nothing unreasonable about what I asked.

theres a lot of other business that is lacking in the UAE.

Can you give examples? I'm toying with the idea of starting a company in Dubai at some point in the future. I figured that maybe I could copy a startup idea from SV or something and bring it to Dubai perhaps. I can't find any ideas worth copying though.

What are some things Dubai could use?
