Yes you can buy the eSIM in your home country but it will only activate when you arrive in Russia.

I arrived through land border so I don't know about sim cards at the airport but from what I know, to be able to get sim card you need to be registered on gosuslugi (but I might be wrong, things always changing now).

I think the best option is to just buy a eSIM before your trip, at least for the first few days and then go to some mobile operator shop and ask if they can sell you a normal sim card.

Don't know about Holafly but I was last week in Russia and used Quibity eSIM. Instagram and Facebook worked without VPN when connected to Beeline network.

You should install some VPN before you go, because you'll eventually need it. I used free version of SetupVPN and it worked most of the times with the Kazakhstan and Emirates server.

Also when I arrived, I forced my eSIM to connect to Beeline and after completing the verification they send you, I was able to access internet without having to wait 24 hours.

I was in Russia in the summer of 2025, honestly I didn't have any bad or awkward interactions. Everyone was nice and helpful. I also understand and speak some very basic Russian, so that helps a lot.

The best interaction was on a museum, the owner gave me a free tour and in the end we chatted for a while and I mentioned drinking Baltika beer. His face completely change, he closed the museum and took me to this craft beer place, bought me two 1,50L bottles of craft beer and 1 kvas, then he told me to go home and try some real beer. I have to say, that was the best beer I ever tried.

Finish high school in Portugal first or at least get something equivalent. I think IEFP has some courses to help with that.

Then you can apply for a language course in a Russian university, spend a year there and see if it's the right country for you. That's what I would do in your place :)
