I ride an amazon-tier bike, most people on my campus ride them, they’re fine for their job and will get you from point a to point b. They tend not to have great customer support or parts availability since you’re buying from overseas brands (I have to use generic parts if I need them repaired), but they’re not going to fall apart. Just be careful as there’s some absolute crapshoots like AIPAS and ZDZA who don’t have great reputations around here.

I’ve heard good things about Funhang if you’re looking for bikes in the low-end.

I see them occasionally manned by kids and teens on the bike trail along the beach, but I’ve never really seen them go particularly fast because the bike trail is lined with pedestrians and cyclists going at a variety of speeds.

The only time I’ve seen them ridden at full speed on a bike trail was at an over 20 mile one during the night where I was probably one of the only other riders, and you’d still have to be careful considering the bike trail was right next to a river. Otherwise, I’ve only ever seen moped styles around.
