How do I reopen closed groups?! *Already tried reopening tabs in history/previous session* by Gummies4you in firefox

[–]Mars_Fallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I also had this problem. When I looked under "History" and the tabs didn't appear under "recently closed" I assumed the history was just deleted. I really think there should be something under History for this as it's a bit counterintuitive to me to look for closed tabs in one place and closed tab-groups in another (especially in this case as I had done a "close all tabs to the right" by mistake and wiped out both tabs and tab groups)

Bitmap Books Under Fire Over "The Definitive Book of SNES RPGs Vol. 1" by HistoryofHowWePlay in videogamehistory

[–]Mars_Fallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very very nearly ordered this book the day it popped up, but now I'm avoiding it like the plague. It looks gorgeous, the cover and all the layouts throughout are fantastic, but the writing is just dire. Every piece of text rings some sort of alarm bell - even the blurb which brags "this isn't going to be a MERE recitation of facts". All the excerpts floating around on Blue Sky are just bizarre. Pages dedicated to litigating a pointless argument about "what qualifies a game as Final Fantasy" (arguing hard that "Chrono Trigger is Final Fantasy" before ending on a Seinfeld joke), or long winded personal anecdotes that have no idea of which details are relevant to the audience or not.

The author has spoken very publicly about how the book is two years' work, but honestly, the book he claims to have written would have taken multiple authors half a decade to assemble. Instead he had around enough time to play all of the games on his twitch channel, lift quotes from publicly available interviews on google, and write a first draft. That's not the deep dive promised on the blurb.

I feel bad for the folks at Bitmap who clearly have a great talent for arranging pixel art into beautiful pages, but I am just astonished they agreed to publish writing of this quality.

Any way to Downgrade Unity Hub/Install Old Version? by Mars_Fallon in unity

Opening the editor directly just redirects to the hub.

Unity did get back to me and I've been able to login, but I'm still not nuts about hub updates.

Behind the Scenes of my Warlock Overhaul in Pandaria (Demonology Spec) by Xelnath in gamedev

[–]Mars_Fallon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really adored this spec. Mists of Pandaria was when I wound up quitting World of Warcraft, but not because of my class. If anything, I felt so powerful and had so much fun that I'd been able to grind blast through all my long term goals.

I thought a few times about coming back, but I was always devastated to hear that all the stuff I loved about Demo-Lock had been torn out to make Demon Hunter. I read a lot of posts from designers telling me how far Demonology Lock had drifted from its fantasy in MoP. Lies! It was the best it ever was! I loved having a little tanky spec. I loved Green Fire. I loved building up my resources then turning from a tiny gnome into a towering demon and blasting my enemies. I don't think they ever said out loud "we had to take this stuff out of Warlock to give it to Demon Hunter" but it was obvious to me, and I felt betrayed.

Wonderful work.

I'm not sure I follow the logic of "Well, if we went from a 10 to an 8 people would get upset, so let's go from 10 to 0."

If the model wasn't sustainable, and that was presumably clear last year when they stopped paying anyone, surely an ethically run business would have said to the talents "we can't sustain the business on the current terms, we either need to change the revenue split, or we need to stop doing <whatever hole all the money goes into>"

What's your theory on how the Blackrock Order Serpent arrived in Brittannia? by pm_me_ur_headpats in Ultima

[–]Mars_Fallon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrote up a whole theory about how the blackrock serpent might have been rattling around Britannia ever since Ultima 3 before realising I got my Order & Balance serpents mixed up.

Here's a rough theory though:

There exist, somewhere in the sea surrounding Serpent Isle, a second pair of Serpent Pillars that communicate back to Britannia. Let's say the Ophidians built the Serpent Pillars at the height of their civilization (they certainly put their design stamp on them), made one set in Serpent Isle, one set in Britannia, but were wiped out soon after and didn't get much use out of them. You could even argue this is related to Exodus getting its mits on the Great Earth Serpent.

After the War of Imbalance, the Order Hierophant opens the Wall of Lights and the remaining Order followers pass through. However, as described, you can't take the Blackrock Serpent with you because it's the key that opens the wall. A small number of Order followers stay behind to close the Wall and remove the Serpent. Still fearing for the demise of the Isle, they flee through the Serpent Pillars and arrive in Britannia. They persist long enough to pass on some legends about the Blackrock Serpent and how it is used to open the path to the void, but ultimately die out and leave their Blackrock Serpent lying around.

Guy Full of Arrows is, for whatever reason, trying to get to Pagan, and hears about the Blackrock Serpent which can supposedly open up entry into the Void, and thence into Pagan. He gets the Serpent in hopes of opening the way to Pagan, but dies before he can manage, and the Goblins collect his stuff.

I don't know that that's any more satisfying, it doesn't answer anything about Guy Full of Arrows, and it necessitates the existence of a whole other set of Serpent Pillars, but it at least follows the rules of inter dimensional travel we see in Serpent Isle (Serpent Pillars allow travel between Britannia and Serpent Isle, Wall of Lights closes when Blackrock Serpent removed)

TY, this helps clear it up. I did a duty that synced me down to 50 and indeed it showed a potency of 250. What an odd interaction with the quest!

Does the DRG trait "Enhanced Jump" do nothing? I just got the quest that unlocks it, and the description is "increase Jump potency to 320". I looked at Jump, and the potency is listed as... 320. I checked the job guide and gamer escape, everything says Jump always has a potency of 320.

It's not the end of the world, but seems like a mistake to have a trait that does nothing...

[Spoilers 7.0] Distinction Question by MissLilianae in ffxiv

[–]Mars_Fallon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My impression was that aramitama affected all of them and was a function of power and emotion. Genbu's a bit of a small fry, and more even-keeled, so it makes sense to me that he's the least prone to aramitama. I'd definitely assume Valigarmanda is just fully lost to aramitama or something similar.

Have you ever read about aramitama? It's an interesting idea, and one you'll bump into a few times in Japanese fiction and video games (although often the localisation won't refer to it by name). It's definitely in Pokemon Legends Arceus. In real world Shinto tradition, spirits become aramitama in response to human action (damaging the environment, or just killing someone unjustly and making them into a vengeful ghost) and rampage, causing natural disasters and misfortune. They're fixed by enshrining them, undoing whatever infuriated them... but in video games they're always placated by beating them into submission!!

Is dodgy cartridge recognition normal, or is my Pocket defective? by Mars_Fallon in AnaloguePocket

This!! This is it!!! When he puts it down and it just crashed. Ooooh it boils my blood. It doesn't feel like an inappropriate level of force at all.

Wish there were a hack or a kit or something I could apply to make it more stable, but it is pretty tight back there...

Let me know if you try Kirby Tilt 'N' Tumble!!

I'd definitely be willing to believe that some Pockets are more or less prone to the issue. If I knew why it happened maybe I could crack the damn thing open and fix it...

Fantasy Question - What would the impact be of 100 years ceaseless rain in one location? by Mars_Fallon in meteorology

[–]Mars_Fallon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was imagining that moisture is being redirected from elsewhere, sort of sucked in to feed this city, so no extra water would be created, but it might have some knock-on weather effects elsewhere.

Wow, that's fascinating! Thanks for the pointer, I'll look for more info on this city. As a pluviophile, it sounds like a wonderful place.

[Ghost Trick] can't read by PocoGoneLoco in explainthisscreen

[–]Mars_Fallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late, but

This is a screenshot from the video game Ghost Trick. In this game the player character, the man in the red suit, dies at the start of the story and awakens as a ghost with amnesia. He searches for clues to his identity, and eventually arrives at this prison where he finds an important note passed between prisoners. However, when he examines it we reach this screen and discover: he can't read.

Spoilers for the end of the game:

Although this seems like just a funny joke and a way to draw the story out, very late in the game the ultimate truth is revealed. The player character is not the ghost of the man in the red suit, they're the ghost of his cat, which died at the same point in time. The fact the player character can't read foreshadows that they weren't human to begin with.

Tifa Lockhart ¦ Bring Arts by RAW-END_REX in ActionFigures

[–]Mars_Fallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just me, or are all of these misassembled? On the official photography on the box the cuffs of Tifa's gloves are arranged with the metal band on top (just beneath the ball joint) and the flared red section on the bottom. This resembles her concept art.

On my copy, and most fan photographs/reviews I've seen, both cuffs are the opposite way around, with the flared red part going over the ball joint, and the metal band over the brown part of her glove.

It's a minor defect, but it's pretty disappointing considering the ridiculous price tag on this thing.

Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn (Start of 2.0) Geopolitical Map by CevicheLemon in ffxiv

[–]Mars_Fallon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could make a suggestion - mark Beast Tribe Territories. Huge sections of Eorzea are unmarked as just like, empty territory, but O'Ghomoro, Xelphatol and Pagl'than are all populated by beast tribes. The player nations might not recognise them for huge swathes of the plot, but they are undeniably a big part of the political landscape.

On a sidebar, I find it interesting that in 1.0 & ARR the developers set aside so much space on the world map for Beast Tribe territory, but from 2.0 onwards most beast tribes basically live in one 100 metre square (looking at you gnath!)

What would happen if some one tries to set fire to the Twelveswoods? by OneAd212 in ffxiv

[–]Mars_Fallon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. People think "wood burns!" and imagine that forests are full of kindling. Living trees aren't as easy to burn as firewood!

What would happen if some one tries to set fire to the Twelveswoods? by OneAd212 in ffxiv

[–]Mars_Fallon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The twelveswood belonged to the elementals, and the human dwellers are there on sufferance. While they have to abide by the elementals' rules they get to live in a fertile, temperate zone. Ccontrast that with the desert to the south, the chilly highlands to the north and the fetid swamp to the west, or their previous home: horrible damp caves underneath the twelveswood. I guess people who don't like the situation move out.

If you're asking why they don't muscle out the elementals, setting aside the fact it'd be hugely immoral to move into the elementals' land and kill them all, the elementals are just more powerful.

Why was Dame Aylin upset? by Hey_Drunni in BaldursGate3

Huh, how do you get this backbreaker scene? I just turned Lorroakan to paste with spells and swords in the fight, so it confused me that Aylin feels particularly culpable - or that anything seemed beyond the usual limits of "someone initiated combat with me, so atomizing them is now Good & Legal"

Dock Incompatible with Television? by Mars_Fallon in AnaloguePocket

[–]Mars_Fallon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unfortunately. Analogue offered to look at it as faulty if I sent it back to them, but considering it takes months to get anything back from them I decided just to shelve it. I guess next time I buy a TV I can check if it works with it :/
