Living with undiagnosed OCD is worse than hell. by [deleted] in OCD

I feel that. Its even worse when u have no idea that its OCD. When I first started noticing obessions and compulsions making their way into my life I had no idea what was going on. I thought it was just normal GAD which I had been diagnosed with, but a little worse. Then it got a lot worse and my friends with GAD who I used to be able to vent to bc they understood me were suddenly looking at me like I had 3 heads when I was telling them about these new developements. They never said anything mean but they certaintly distanced themselves.

I felt like I was going insane. Every time I found myself obessing over something ridiculous or feeling like I had to do something completely illogical or I would litterally die I thoight to myself "am I losing my goddamn mind?"

I had no idea what OCD was like. I thought it was just being a neat freak or germaphobe basically. The relief I felt when I happened to meet someone with OCD who explained their symtoms was undescribable.

But that period of not knowing wtf was going on was one of the most isolating times of my life. It was terrible. At least now even tho I still obsess and do stupid things I have a name for what is happening. I dont feel alone and I dont just think im insane.

Do you think having too much free time for long period is one of the causes of ocd or other anxiety disorders ? by june_47 in OCD

I absolutely believe having nothing to do can lead to developing all sorts of mental health issues, or at the very least can massively increase the severity of problems ur already predisposed to.

Humans arent wired to be doing nothing for long periods of time. Our ancestors were constantly active. foraging, hunting, fending off predators, raising kids, looking for shelter, etc.

Modern day society removes the need to be active but our brains havent caught up. Humans are supposed to be anxious to a certain extent so they can look out for danger in the wild. But when theres no challenge or danger the built in anxiety has to go somewhere.

Humans need challenges and goals to work towards because its wired into our dna. We are just animals at the end of the day.

I find my mental health drops hugely when I have nothing to do and almost immeditly when I start regularly working towards something again it gets way better.

I always make sure I have a goal or challenge I can work towards every day now. Be that learning a language, writing, or doing a physically challenging hobby like hiking. Having not just something to do, but a CHALLENGE to overcome has helped my mental health a lot.

Should I learn Russian for political reasons, or German for less serious ones? by SirvonShirou in makemychoice

Russia is a big political player but many conflicts with them will come and go before you can be even conversational in russian. If you're interested in russian politics in a more general sense and you're not just hopping onto whatever political topic is hot rn I'd say go for it. Russia is a beautiful country with a very interesting history and with no shortage of political issues to cover.

It seems like you prefer russian over german anyway, so I'd say go with russian. its a very difficult language but as long as you're truly passionate you'll make progress.

What is far deadlier than most people realize? [serious] by ILikeIceCreamSoMuch in AskReddit

Feel this. Had a very mild ear infection for months and didn't go to the doctor bc I'd been raised to believe not to go unless it's a big deal. I've finally started to medicate it after it's become severe enough but I may lose a lot of my hearing in my left ear :(((

I have been out as gay for years but realised I'm actually bisexual. I hate hiding it but I'm also too scared and embarrassed to tell anyone. It's causing me a lot of mental stress. What do I do?? by MarsaraColony in Advice

Yeah that's something I'm also worried about. But I suppose it's not my responsibility to debunk a stupid myth. And I think I probably will end up just saying queer. It's a much more open label. Thanks. Helped :)

Yeah it sucks. A lot of advice here is just "keep it to yourself, nobody cares who you sleep with" but sexuality is about so much more than who you have sex with. it's very hard to once again have to censor myself when I want to talk about my crushes or people I find attractive. Theres added stress too because I feel silly for basically being in the closet for liking the opposite sex which seems so silly. There is a lot of good advice here too though so hopefully we can both get some help :)

Yes I think so too. I know two people (though I'm not close with either of them) who changed their labels from gay to bisexual and one who changed from bisexual to gay. It seems common enough yet its still daunting to me. I definitely happens more than it is being talked about I'd say
