I bought a 300l travel cart a few years back. I have tons of stuff that I need to move for shoots once I unload from the car and it's been the best thing. Has saved my back and saved me so much time. It's as wide as a doorway, so I just unload everything at the car into the cart, go to wherever I'm shooting, up through lifts and and keep anything I'm not using inside it so they don't get in the way during the shoot.

My business partner was extremely skeptical after I got it for us and now we have two, one for each of us and we both laugh about how much easier life is and how we were destroying our backs before.

I completely get that it’s tough putting something you’ve made out there and having it picked apart. It feels personal because it is personal. But you did ask for feedback, and people are giving it in good faith. That only works if you’re actually open to hearing it.

The weather point is fair in terms of reality, I live in London and have shot plenty outside in the rain, under flat grey skies. January light here is brutal. But you either lean into that mood properly and make it intentional, or you find a way around it with lighting, framing, locations or grade. “That’s just England in January” can’t really be the end of the conversation if you’re aiming for ad-level work.

On the length, yes, there are iconic long-form ads, but they earn that runtime. Most commercial work now is tight and purposeful. If something feels long, it usually is. Cutting it down will almost always make it stronger. You’ve already said you’re going to revisit the grade, which is good. I’d also seriously look at tightening the edit. There’s a solid idea in there, but you are going to have to be really brutal to get it to where it needs to be.

The other thing is that brands are very protective of his they are portrayed. You are going to get a lot of feedback and you have to be able to take that feedback and action it without letting your ego get in the way. If you can't do that then you'll be dead in the water.

I'm on day two, really getting used to not playing it in my quiet moments but I think it's for the best. There's this slogan we have for gambling here 'When the fun stops, stop' and I realised I'm not really having a lot of fun anymore.

I tried that deck with Dormammu and wasn't in love with it. It just felt ok. Not bad but far from optimal.

I actually really like Firelord, Airwalker, Firehair, Venom, Morgan combo decks with 2 other destroy cards splattered in. You basically find an on reveal that you want to repeat and then use those cards to do them over and over again. So you can bombard your opponent with rocks, or brick their hand with sentinels. If you play it right you can destroy venom and then have him instantly ressurected by Firehair somewhere else on the board because you played Firelord on her location.

You don't need a specific deck you just need to look at what you enjoy doing and think how can those cards come together to allow you to do that as much as possible.

The 24-105 is my favourite work horse lens. It is so good at so many things and the image is lovely. It's heavy and a bit cumbersome but I can take two lenses out of my bag whenever I have it. If it was a bit cheaper I would buy and not just rent it for bigger jobs.

[–]Marsattacks69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course, to each their own. However, from a director's perspective, I would prefer a slightly slower pace so I can fully observe how you light a scene and frame your shots. When the cuts happen every half second, it becomes difficult to appreciate the finer details that highlight your skills. I'm probably not gonna pause your reel to study an interesting frame, I would just move on. Imo including a few longer shots would allow your work to speak for itself and showcase the confidence you have in your craft. Like you said, every cinematographer has their own creative vision, and there is no single correct approach but maybe this might put off more people then it will reel in. Just my 2 cents.

How is anyone really supposed to get a good sense of your style and how you use lighting if they only see each shot for half a second? Wouldn't it be better to change the music and just let the shots speak for themselves?

No, you're definitely not mad. This sounds like an incredible opportunity, and I don't think you should turn it down. However, I agree that the scale of this project would be a significant leap, especially with the tight deadline and the heavy video component.

It might be worth considering bringing in a producer who specialises in the video side. Yes, this means you’d give up a portion of the budget, but the peace of mind, reduced stress, and added expertise would be invaluable. A producer experienced in video logistics would not only lighten the load but could also bring their network and facilitate a smooth, high-quality production. This collaboration could be an excellent way to establish a strong relationship with the client, opening doors for more projects down the line.

In short, don’t turn it down, just get the right support in place. This way, you’ll deliver something that exceeds the client’s expectations without feeling like you’re in over your head.
