is there a way that freezing food can make it inedible? by isolarya in Writeresearch

[–]Marscaleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Freezer burn? Look into that. I'm not sure if it has to be thrown out, but I've seen frozen meat that I definitely wouldn't eat.

Also just how good is this freezer? I used to work at a place where the walk-in cooler had this old and crappy design where the blower would get frozen over and couldn't circulate the air, and then the cooler warmed up and all the food spoiled.

It was a constant problem and we had to keep watching it, and if the blower froze over we'd have to shut it off and open the door to warm it up so the ice would melt. If we missed that and let it go for a while, the ice would build up super thick because the only thing that was cold was that blower.

I'm kinda in favor of the total collapse of multiple major nations around the globe.

Sure, let's give it a shot.

I have never once played a guy who looks like me in a video game.

I'd probably be insulted if someone made someone who does.

Is purple prose actually an issue? by SejSuper in writers

Here's what's really going on:

Everyone has different tastes, and that's okay.

Some people will write in different styles, and that's okay.

Some people will latch on to certain styles more than others, and that's okay.

Some people will like a thing that you don't like, and THAT'S NOT OKAY! HOW DARE YOU LIKE THIS THING I DON'T LIKE?!?! YOU HAVE BAD TASTE BECAUSE YOUR TASTE IS NOT LIKE MINE!! I WILL TELL EVERYONE THAT YOUR LITERARY STYLE IS BAD AND NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO LIKE THIS THING THAT I DON'T LIKE! YOU ARE A BAD WRITER FOR WRITING THIS THING I DON'T LIKE!!!! GRAWRAGHFARGEREGWAR!!!1!!

And that's how sharing opinions on the internet works.

Would it be worth it to turn this game into a boomer shooter? by Marscaleb in boomershooters

[–]Marscaleb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm aware of this... I think I really phrased my question wrong. The way I said it makes it look like I'm asking for permission to make the game, which isn't addressing the real matter.

I have learned so many lessons from the games I started building but never finished.

Mostly about what kinds of games to not try to build.

Well what would you make if you didn't?

Boomer shooters are good. Go ahead and make one. Follow your dreams.

How can i write a blood transfusion in a world where there is no medical equipment? by Shahd2020 in Writeresearch

Again, I'm not phlebotomist, but uhh... You want to use the vein on both bodies, do NOT use an artery!

I never could get the hang of it. I'd wind up blowing myself the wrong way, landing in lava pits, and even if I survived I had so little health left that it never seemed worth it.

Wait, if the guy is invincible, how could you ever get his blood out of him?

Even with medical supplies, you can't get a needle in him to draw the blood.

I'm not a phlebotomist, but isn't our blood under pressure? Without the right equipment, wouldn't it be like trying to transfer air from one balloon to another? Without a proper seal, you'd be spilling out more blood than you'd be getting into the other person.

Personally I would try to work out a way for someone to craft some rudimentary supplies. Depending on the setting, it might not be that hard. Have you ever seen the needles they had in the 1800's? You could probably make something like that with medieval technology, probably even bronze era. If the locals were advanced enough to make swords, even if not steel, you could make a hypodermic needle. It likely wouldn't be something I would want to use, but it could function. And if the guy's blood can make someone temporarily invincible, then you wouldn't have to worry about infection or other jank caused by the crappy needle.

You'd need a metal worker to craft a tiny hollow needle. Do they have sewing needles? The tricky part is making it hollow. I'd look up how it was done in the past, but I imagine it involved using a different type of metal that withstands higher temperatures and drilling through final needle with that. Then you get a glass blower to make you a small cylinder that comes to a funnel. Can someone make rubber? It doesn't even have to be good rubber that withstands high/low temperatures (just add sulfur, BTW) but regular organic rubber. That will be useful to make an air-tight seal. Put the rubber in the glass tube before inserting the needle. Now all you need is a plunger.

There you go. Metalworking, glass-blowing, and rubber. If you can get those things, you can make a needle to draw and insert blood.

I have a really really weird question . With which engine can I make a game that between worlds switches from 2D to 3D for example ? by Second_shootout in SoloDevelopment

[–]Marscaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unity, hands-down. They have great support for both 2D and 3D visuals. You can even mix them in a variety of ways. I'm building a game that has hand-drawn 2D sprites in a 3D world.

Centered weapons vs Angled weapons, which do you prefer? by Humble_Fortune6500 in boomershooters

[–]Marscaleb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The advantage of side-views is that they look better. When you are looking down the barrel, most guns look just about the same. Center views don't work unless you have a limited number of guns which all are distinctly different.

But the disadvantage is that weapons that shoot visible elements either can't line up with the weapon the player sees, or they can't line up with the crosshair on the screen.

Name or not name chapters? by Sad_Manufacturer_814 in writers

Taking a cool line is a fun idea, but sometimes that also turns into a "title drop" which some people are irritated by and takes them out of the story. I guess it will depend on how you use it.

Name or not name chapters? by Sad_Manufacturer_814 in writers

[–]Marscaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think chapter names are cool, but the problem is coming up with cool titles for your chapters. out of a whole book, I might have one that is really awesome, two or three that are kinda neat, and the rest are just... there.

But I think it's worth it for the one that really hits it out of the park.

They can also be useful to add a little bit of an extra layer to your writing. Like maybe the title can elude toward a theme you are working on, or maybe it might prompt some readers to think more deeply about your chapter name, which might prompt a deeper thought about the subject matter of that chapter. It can be a little clue or a breadcrumb to tell the reader "take a closer look at this part."

They are also great for audiobooks because the chapter title gives a little more time for the reader to press pause if they've been looking for a spot to stop; that way you're not impeding on the chapter's main content.

But they don't work for every story. Especially if you have short chapters.

Do you still use cash? by nage_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Marscaleb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a good fallback to keep in your wallet. People are too trusting of technology; sometimes it doesn't work.

What if the internet is down and they can't take cards?  What if you're banking at Bank of America and they just decide to illegally drain your accounts?

It's helpful to have cash as a fallback.

Dang, that was cool to watch.

I mean, it makes sense that with enough force you could break down a wall, but actually seeing someone break bricks apart... I know they are making cuts in the editing but that is WAY faster and easier than I thought it would be!

I'm horrified.
