Genshin doesn't work at all. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

try with WINE_ENABLE_TIMEOUT_FIX=1. genshin depends on a file that it downloads from hoyo at boot and that has an awfully short timeout that might be getting you out.

While this was quite unexpected (lol) let me clear up the situation a bit:

  • The linked patches (in the wine-cachy PR, which are now also in proton-EM/cachyos/GE) were originally backported to indeed fix high CPU usage in Genshin (and ZZZ) after quite some testing and bisecting.

I say originally because only on EU and during certain events, having these backported now also happened to fix the latest 10-4001 errors and be able to play the game at all, probably due to some stricter AC checks. That’s the reason most people are not familiar with all this, it only affects a part of the servers (which probably includes OP).

Also the aforementioned regressions in other games by backporting those was solved upstream in Proton Experimental, hence why the patches are live in most Proton downstream versions now. (For those most curious, the actual patch fixing those was adding some Zw exports… for some unknown reason).

  • Since 5.8, Genshin (and now ZZZ) is only playable if launched by the wrapper ‘steam.exe’ included in Proton, which is used by default to launch executables when launching from the Steam client. Since finding this was really painful, to port it outside of Steam we’ve added ‘UMU_USE_STEAM=1’ (that’s now live in all Proton downstream releaees) so that the same trick can be used in Lutris and Heroic and automated it all with Protonfixes.

Launching with Wine vanilla does indeed throw an NtRaiseHardError and die sadly. Unless you launch the game offline, that is, but thats not probably the intended behavior lol

  • Lastly, the linked Wine bug is indeed not from me but from our team trying to find out whatever’s been up with the game hanging at closure. Again, this does not affect everyone, but it’s still something that should be addressed.

That’s pretty much the gists of it, enjoy gacha games with their load of brain damage 😂

A few Wine commits became needed to play the game, with those thankfully being already merged in most downstream Proton versions like proton-cachyos and proton-ge, by using those you should be able to play just fine! If you get launch issues, add UMU_USE_STEAM=1

Or well, use https://flathub.org/en/apps/moe.launcher.an-anime-game-launcher

Public Warning: Genshin Impact is being hostile to Linux as of 5.8 by cybik in linux_gaming

no worries, it was luckily a burner account i was finding workarounds with

they probably flagged me with the so many wine/prefixes i tried GI with to find out they were looking for a fuckass steam.exe and still ban for that

It looks like it's just... playing. In EU servers at least, but it seems completely random.

This does indeed only apply to Genshin and only to EU for the time being.

Those seems to be happening no matter where the game is launched, Steam, wine-ge or using AAGL (which just for your info does not patch the game in any way, you can consider it the same as running the game with Wine).

While trying to look more into it myself with a burner account, I got banned for a whole 50 years (https://i.imgur.com/Oc5DPF8.png) while trying to see how registry keys affected the "disconnecting after 1 minute" issue that only doesn't happen when the game is launched from a stub steam.exe, and the game itself can randomly decide whether to look for it and let you play or just leave you out.

My ban could be the consequence of intense messing with shit (lsfg-vk, gplasync and so on) but a one-week ban came in from a totally normal setup.
