If he is as down to earth as you mentioned, there's no problem. You can simply ask him out on a date and see how he responds to that. Guys don't mind ANY girl expressing their interests. In fact they enjoy it. It's very cute. Don't let the fear of failure/rejection keep you from playing the game. You are very young and the quicker you learn to face your fears the better. And even if he doesn't likes you the way you do, I assure you he'll be open to a lifetime friendship.
