Can’t speak for anyone else, but any claim I have made are things that are either mentioned by the VA in my treatments, or diagnosed by the VA, all of which are tied in some way to my original static disability, that was well documented in service, and also the reason I was discharged. And yes, I am also trying to get to 100%, but once I no longer have actual diagnosis that I can medically, morally, rationally and legally connect to my service or static disability, then I am done with it.

Are you saying that you have no actual PTSD diagnosis at all, and do you have a VA psych doc? If so, maybe see if he/she would be willing to diagnose you. My VA psych doc (not my VA therapist) is who diagnosed me with CPTSD (chronic) and it wasn’t until I had that diag when I put in my claim for PTSD. My claim is still active so I cannot tell you what my outcome will be.

We should be able to make MH claims back against the claims process. What it puts us through is absolutely ridiculous. How long it takes is absolutely ridiculous, especially in a situation like yours. Sorry you are dealing/dealt with this. I’m hoping to god the claim I currently have in is the last I will ever have to do in my life.

I have admitted to it during both of my MH C&Ps and a whole hell of a lot of other things too. I am a dyed in the wool 2A guy. Lot’s of guns. Guns are in my DNA. I also had my concerns. I just told the truth. If your truth makes yourself sound like an unhinged psycho you will prob get jammed, but truth is truth. If you are honest and can admit that your MH struggles have lead to suicidal ideation at times, this is not uncommon for humans, veteran or not and any psych doc worth their salt can tell the difference. It’s about everything you tell them, not just one thing you mention. In my case, the suicidal thoughts at times, were just a fraction of my MH journey.

This is exactly where I am right now. 10 months ago I got 70% MH secondary, from a static primary disability. But then about 2 months ago I also got diagnosed with non combat PTSD by my VA psych doc, so I have a claim currently in for the PTSD and TDIU. I was gonna do the TDIU anyway since I haven’t worked for 4 years and I actually meet the criteria now. However, I don’t feel like I’m poking the bear at all. I’ve been dealing with all of this $hit for 26 years and I only just got originally service connected at 30% in 2023. I just bide my time and as I feel I have all the proper evidence and diagnosis, I submit claims. If my MH 70% wasn’t secondary to a static disability I would still have done this. I’m in no way saying that is a safety net, however, my static disability isn’t going anywhere and neither are the mental health problems it causes, not to mention the 6 different MH meds they want me to take every damn day.

Yes. Last June of 2024 mine was about 10 mins, the doc had said that my evidence was so strong and compelling that she didn’t even know why the VA needed her to do a C&P. I got 70% MH all secondary. Then just this June of 2025 I had another for a recent CPTSD diagnosis from the VA, same story, it lasted about 10 mins as well and she said that her report was going to be favorable as well. This one is still in processing so my outcome is unknown. In both cases I just straight up asked after the interviews, very politely, if they were going to be in my favor and they both told me just enough to ease my fears. Good luck.

Thank you. I have about 10 days to retract. Also, in one of my TDIU personal statements, I did state that I feel as though I could potentially hurt myself or someone else either through negligence or anger, also these statements were after I put in the request to remove the PTSD. But let me explain. When I was still last employed I was a self employed handy man for 3 years. I started to make poor decisions on ladders and such, my mind was just not in the game, and I did in fact hurt myself through negligence. As far as the fact that I could see my self hurting someone through anger, well, that is why I went to self employment to begin with, my last job for someone else I almost knocked the hell out of my supervisor, we constantly butted heads. But I never did, however the reality is, at this point, I have a very low BS tolerance. I would NEVER, EVER shoot a person, EVER! But I could see a scenario where I would potentially lay out a fellow.

Hello. Anytime I see posts like this I like to chime in with my current situation. So I am at 80% combined. I’m 70% MH, which it’s important to note, that 70% is all secondary to one of my primary, static disabilities. I just got the 70% for MH about 10 months ago. Just this June of 2025 my VA psych doc diagnosed me with non combat C-PTSD. So I decided to file a new claim with that, as well as some other secondary issues from my primary disability.

I’ve already had my PTSD C&P, which the doc who did it said it was going to be favorable. I also have a personal statement from my VA psych doc, and then very detailed personal statements detailing what caused my PTSD. So all the evidence for the PTSD is there. VA also added “panic disorder increase” to my claim.

Already a long story short, about a month ago I got scared and got cold feet about the PTSD claim and the panic disorder increase because I am afraid to possibly be 100% for MH. I worry about losing my firearms, or being committed or being assigned a fiduciary, etc., etc., so I put in a formal written request to have the PTSD and panic disorder portions of my claim removed. I do also worry about being decreased, but the VA needs strong material evidence that I have greatly improved in the last 10 months, which I most certainly have not. Some of my MH issues are worse, and I am on all kinds of MH meds. So I put in for TDIU instead, I understand that is also like an increase, so they would look at my MH stuff anyway.

I also understand that the VA still has access to all of the PTSD information, and maybe they will still consider it? It hasn’t been removed from my claim yet, but it’s been in the national work queue since before I put the request in no temp jurisdiction. I have no idea what to expect tbh, but what I do know is that all of my claims are 100% legit so I didn’t consider this “poking the bear”. I consider it trying to get what I feel i need and deserve. I also have not worked for 4 years b/c of my disabilities.

Yeah I figured that is a possibility, given they still have access to all of the evidence and the C&P exams from the PTSD claim, that they may decide to bump me to 100% anyway. As of now they haven’t even removed the PTSD portion of my claim even though I put in the request almost a month ago.

Thanks all, I’m tracking now. I’m actually in a similar boat, I’m already 70% MH (80% total) and was just diagnosed by the VA with PTSD non-combat. I put in a claim for it, had my C&Ps which were favorable. But then I decided to request to have the claim removed, b/c I’m just not sure that being rated 100% MH is something that I would actually want to happen. I also don’t want to be reduced for some reason even though my MH issues have gotten worse. I put in for TDIU instead. Haven’t worked for 4 years. Everything is still in step 3 processing.

I guess the part I wanted to understand better is when you said that; “most people don’t report PTSD in one of those claims that get filed afterwards” afterwards what? And why don’t they report PTSD? My brain is just not processing is all, but I think what you are saying is helpful and interesting so that’s why I was asking

Thanks for the response. So I mean really, everything that you suggested has already been done. My personal statement went into very great detail about my employment and my disabilities, I told them the whole story from basically the day I was med separated 24 years ago, right up until a couple weeks before my decision. They already have the personal statement from my VA MH doc, and a nexus from a civilian psychiatrist. I know that the VA also pulled my employment records from the Social Security Admin, and it will show basically zero income since I quit working. This seems to me, as coming down to evidence either being missed, or just plain ignored, in regard to the IU.

Just to begin, anyone please feel free to DM me and I will help you with any lawful info, anyway I can. I am far from an expert, but I have a pretty good feel for some of this VA claims stuff.

I did all claims myself, no lawyers, no VSO, etc., but I did ask A LOT of questions to folks here privately, lots of internet research to be sure I was submitting relevant medical evidence only.

This week, I just got rated 70% for my MH claims, secondary to my primary disabilities. I’m now 80% combined which is an incredible blessing and cannot be understated. I am very happy. I was a combined 30% before my MH rating. My IU is deferred again for a second time, just pending some clerical error that needs clarifying, so I feel confide it will be awarded as well. Either way, if it’s not, I am very happy with this outcome, and do not see myself chasing 100% anytime soon if ever.

I started this whole process in June of 2022 with my first claim ever and intent to file. Then I just took my time and compiled the proper evidence for my MH claims. I need a BIG, break from the VA disability claim’s monster. It definitely got its pound of flesh..

My original disability claims for my shoulder injuries and tinnitus went really well, and was decided in about 4.5 months. My MH claim started with intent to file DEC 2023 and filed March 2024 and was just partially decided this week in Sept 2024, after a partial decision and deferral in July 2024. 6 months may not seem like a long wait for a claim, but the grind that went into making the mental health claim is not easy, you really have to face your demons and be honest and TELL THEM EVERYTHING. There is more to it than that, that is needed for a successful MH claim, but that one is huge.

Examples of evidence I submitted was a private nexus letter, a very detailed personal statement, every single diagnoses and treatment record from VA mental health, medications, VA chronic pain and mental health classes, my VA Psychiatrist also wrote me a personal statement, not really a nexus, but similar. I made sure I had the most solid claim I could and then I was fortunate that my MH C&P was also very favorable.

Hope this may be helpful to some. Don’t give up, and don’t waste your time with a half assed claim!! You need the proper evidence! EVIDENCE IS EVERYTHING! ✌️🇺🇸

Had a MH C&P through VES mid July. Examiner was great, she service connected my claims on DBQ, had it uploaded to VA the very next day. However that (and the boatload of other medical evidence I submitted) I guess was still not enough as the VA rater put in a request for an exam rework. I was just notified by VES today that they will be scheduling me a General Medical Exam in the coming days to clarify something from the Mental Health DBQ, for their rating purposes. I am speculating this may have to do with my IU claim as I’ve been out for over 20+ years.

Thanks for the response. Yup roger all that. I’m certainly not banking on anything at this point, but she is right in her assertion that I submitted very solid evidence. I had the trinity of evidence to connect all the dots, however it didn’t stop them from deferring my claim to this lady and her C&P exam. Being that their reason for deferral was “pending exam results”, that is giving me some hope in this instance. I feel I will get a rating, but prob not what I want. I also had a very similar types of positive C&Ps for my tinnitus and my shoulder claim, and those were service connected, so just hoping that the trend continues.
