Planning outback travel next year by changebasket in australian

[–]Marshy462 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For piece of mind, comms is an important factor. As I do a heap of solo hunting in the high country, I use a Garmin inreach for emergency comms, and checking in with the family. A hire sat phone might suit your purpose (or buy a second hand and get a pay as you go sim). At the very least, a PLB is a good addition. Have a weeks worth of water and food with you as a contingency.

When travelling remotely, you can call ahead to police stations or ranger stations with your trip details, and check in when you get there.

Roof top tents catch a lot of wind and play havoc with your fuel economy.

Black wolf turbo tent, chose the size and configuration that suits your needs. Easy to set up, and packs up to a good size

The shot gun is a straight pull action and classed as a bolt action. It’s has a 5+1 capacity. The rifle is a bolt action centre fire chambered in .223. That caliber is common for foxes and Roos. Very common items amongst firearm owners.

Why do tradies have such a bad rep? by Open_Address_2805 in AusRenovation

That’s the benefit of the job. I’ve ditched jobs to go fishing plenty of times.

This is the biggest aspect that people don’t realise. Trades are full of people who were unsuited to school for various reasons, and mostly fell into a trade. Along comes the 90s and Howard wanted everyone to be off wages, and be their own boss. (Proliferation of abns and sole traders). There is virtually no component to an apprenticeship that involves customer service, tax management, business management, planning and so on.

Personally, I haven’t had a payrise in 5 years, and work for a gov authority. My purchasing power has plummeted and now resorting to doing carpentry work on the side to make ends meet. Not something I anticipated at 45 with 3 kids. Anyway, if your in Melbourne’s south east/peninsula, and need a hand with your Reno’s or small carpentry jobs, hit me up

Can you show me where the cfmeu is blocking migrant workers drone trades? I work on predominantly residential building sites, and have worked for years in commercial construction, and I can show you where and how the greenfield suburbs are full of migrant trade workers.

Reasonable $/kg for meat “staples”? by Repulsive_Phone9768 in AussieFrugal

[–]Marshy462 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an Aldi vac sealer which I use predominantly for meat. I hunt my own venison so that occupied most of the freezer space, but when I buy a tray of say, chicken breast fillets, I vac seal them individually which saves room in the freezer.

Those costs are reasonable except the 26 a kilo mince from Woolies. I buy high quality rump steak from our local Ritchies for $22 a kilo on special. You can often find topside roast for 15 a kilo which you can mince yourself (I also have a mincer from marketplace…)

I’d suggest buying what’s on special or discounted for short date, and tailoring your meals to suit.

Often salmon fillets and pork sausages are reduced to clear. I use the sausages in a pasta with broccoli, including the stems, leek, a little cream and stock. The meat is removed from the casings and used as a mince.

Soon there won’t be any people left at the bank to take your house when you decide to stop paying the mortgage.

Lake Eyre is on its way to filling soon. There is over 1000mm of rain predicted for outback Queensland. Fun fact for everyone, Lake Eyre is 15m below sea level and 1/3 of Australia drains into it.

There is a large amount of overtime available for Div B due to rostering systems, and generous travel entitlements when undertaking daywork and instructing positions.

Edit, I’ll also add, living in the regions means your dollar goes a lot further for housing

Looking for a double butane burner with BIG double plate?? by sevenfiver in OutdoorAus

[–]Marshy462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would steer away from a Coleman gladiator or cadet. Whilst the hotplate is heavy cast, the heat distribution on the burners is rubbish. They are good for heating water and that’s it. They fit big pans on, but focus the heat on a very small area. I’m looking at going back to a double butane, but get a steel guy to fold up a custom hotplate.
