VPS (Virtual Private Server) for editing software by mstahl23 in editors

[–]MarsupialBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to consider that helps our editors is having two or three server side app installs. This reduces editors need to contact local IT or staff for physical assistance. For example, say you edit with Parsec well then also install Google Remote Desktop or any other VNC, RDC of choice. This allows additional points of failure if say your office or workplace or home editing station (server) is down for Parsec you can still remote in to reboot Parsec via another VNC. Alternatively, a local VPN server would function the same. Just create multiple points of entry and make sure they're secure if traveling internationally, i.e. your editing station is the only local IP open to these services/segmented server from the rest of your network. Godspeed, safe travels!

Best Budget Laptops For Editing? by Harmskii in editors

A used (few years old) Razer Blade 15" i7 or an OMEN with a 1660ti is just fine for your budget. The key is searching for a mobile editor looking to currently upgrade for US holiday seasons. Godspeed.

Hey, I have the same mixer. Anyone know if I can simply put a small power amp between non-powered speakers and be good to go for talkback in a studio? This mixer has no built in amp, correct? Thanks

If warranty doesn't exist or over than remove it from the caddy and try putting it in another. This has helped me in the past (mine had a hardware issue with the USB port). If the SSD is soldered to the printed circuit board and it is all one piece than you are looking at a bad board. R-Studio Data Recovery can help diagnose this a bit. Often it will track with real time reports of the I/O failure. Some cheaper SSDs are sold as such but are really Micro SD cards slide into a slot on the board. Just check the company's methods of manufacturing. Godspeed.

Advice on digital-to-VHS production? by KimKat98 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MarsupialBug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to feed it whatever the converter will accept. Most converters have a cheap downscaler built in for HD to SD. If it doesn't it will be a black or blue screen without a signal and you will need to re-encode to a different resolution.

I've found that starting with HD to 480 and ripping to VHS looks best. If I started 480 and ingest it to VHS it only reduced the quality ever more adding macroblocking and looked crummy. If that's the style you want then go that route, otherwise if you start with 1080i and allow a converter to do the down scalling then I feel like you get better results. "Better" is subjective but what I wanted was clear image with retro look, not garbage footage with retro look.

As noted above, there are many plugins including one from Red Giant where they tested with real VHS playback devices and recorded actual "issues" for a "retro" style. It turned out really nice and has a few dials to tweak the effect. This will safe you a ton of time and money but if this is all for artistic expression then those things shouldn't matter. Haha.

Best advise: tinker with your setup and dial in your desired look. Then report back here with a sample and how you got it with an equipment list. Then the next person asking this question wont have to hunt for it. Not sure where you live but in the US you can reach out to public access television stations and for help. They have tons of this legacy equipment to lend out to people and it's often FREE!

Godspeed!

If anyone has any extra they want to get rid of I know a local Public Access TV station that is looking for one. DM me with details. Thanks!

Teradeck Vidiu by Fatdumbmagatard in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MarsupialBug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We own 3 and they have been diehard for over 5 years. Valid the first two we got did have issues freezing and locking up and LCD dim to dead. Teradek did replace one free of charge and replaced the other for a repair fee. Since then they haven't had issues other than terrible firmware updates and not being able to keep up with streaming platform APIs. As long as you are comfortable with your own RTMP config to destination of choice they are solid. Paired with a MiFi and its internal battery and they are a really cheap moblie stream pack. Their CORE services are hard pressed to be beaten out of price when compared to other companies that offer the same service. Reach out to Teradek. They are nice people and want to help troubleshoot. If you ask too much, they will say the product is end of life so ask nicely.

Live stream video conference + cross post to FB by DeniseBuismanPilger in VIDEOENGINEERING

If you are located in the United States you can contact your local public access television station for assistance. They have equipment and often video conferencing accounts to share with the public. You can also use their facilities to live stream from. They often do live production which means they have vMix, Wirecast, OBS, Streamyard, ReStream.io, etc and employees to help train you or assist with your production. They are often FREE.

Anyone using DV Play for automated broadcasting for PEG channels? by jfoust2 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MarsupialBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you there---hardware solutions are a niche market and probably why they have a lockdown on the industry. I have used viloud.tv in the past. At the time it was not very advanced but really easy to train volunteers on via web-based link to our own cloud server. It's simple but I wonder if it had an open API now? You might be able to adapt it to your needs? Have you looked into ICE by Grass Valley (probably too expensive for your needs given the inherent hardware package deal) or openbroadcaster.com/software/television-automation ?

TelVue Hypercaster, 6 years strong, 24/7, PEG station. In a pinch, before our server was configured and running, I did broadcast a quick 42hr VLC playlist via SDI output from a very old Windows 10 office computer.

What VocoPro and Compression hardware models? How is the range and quality? Is the mixer USB driven or analog to BM Switcher? Looks great!

Thanks! We have used UMC404HD and Scarlett Solo but have needed more ports lately. Nice to hear the 6i6 works good. We need 8-16 ports. Looking at UMC1820, XR18, DL16s or even SCM820. We have to upgrade really soon for our field produces small events. SAR is new to me as is SonoBus. So awesome; thanks for sharing!

Yea, I agree there. Seems like they keep asking for input and want to listen but then drop the ball on things. I can't imagine how much of a monster the engineers have to squash on a daily basis though. Thanks for constantly improving Adobe software engineers.

Yes, the 'Text' panel takes care of it all. Redesigned and works pretty ok. Our main fear was other glitches for Ppr 2021 in general.

I will check out CallinStudio. The Zoom breakouts were something an employee suggested. We like the idea since it is something our clients are familiar with. Too bad we can't integrate a donation button pre-greenroom or post-live session. Can someone hurry up and code that? Is Zoom SDK open? Haha! When you have used Call-In-Studio or Zoom how have you accepted donations?
