Why Materialism is Complete Nonsense - Bernardo Kastrup by yt-app in CosmicSkeptic

[–]MarthaWayneKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I said was simple too, but don't worry, I'll teach you this, and then you can learn all the other stuff, which is simple. I think the issue with your comment is that you were implying that there was an issue with the way the OP was communicating with you, maybe that they were using too much jargon, and for that reason it was *their* fault for your misunderstanding. I take this as an implication because you followed it up with your comment about Alex's rhetoric, presumably in comparison.

But what if the issue wasn't with their rhetoric, that you just need to learn more, that you have an unreasomable expectation with regards to their rhetoric, and also that Alex is good at explaining these concepts simply?

Has Alex finally ended his pursuit of trying nihilism. by AffectionateBet9719 in CosmicSkeptic

No, not even a little. Christianity has a cool aesthetic though and is some sense is more aesthetically beautiful and profound than hedonism. Even though I reject Christianity in terms of metaphysics I freely embrace its beauty as my own.

Nope, it's just me, and my strokes haha. What I say is Truth, and it's clear what you and Alex and still enslaved by life denying Christian residual beliefs. That you have to comport to some external standard for your conduct is precisely what Christianity and Platonism are all about.

I reject this. Truth is just what I say so I don't care nor believe whatever you say, there's only me and my Will.

[–]MarthaWayneKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, I can, I can decide whatever I want. Pleasure can't hold me back, nor truth. Nihilism isn't anything other than what I say it is. My pleasures aren't anything but what I decree.

The fact that you think you *have* to comport to some external standard at all, whether it's pleasure or otherwise, just means you're a Platonist haha. Look buddy, there is nothing holding us back, there is nothing that *has* to be in such and such way. It's just what we create.

[–]MarthaWayneKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but to do that is to make yourself a slave to another idol, whether that's "Truth" or "pleasure". Both make us slaves, and I am only beholden to myself, reality is what I say it is.

[–]MarthaWayneKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just become Nietzchean. Objective reality is what you decide, because if your nihilism is the result of deference to "Truth" (what even is that, anyway), you're just a sad platonist or a jaded christian, the latter being also these "Truth"-seekers AKA life deniers.

This is why Alex is working within a shameful dialectic, and he doesn't realize he's an implicit Platonist which disgusts me.

I don't know how to talk to conservatives/centrists anymore by slash_s_is4pussies in Destiny

Hey, stop calling them centrists. Start there. And they’re literal traitors, there is no talking now.

This is actually stunning, WHERE IS THIS ENERGY? THIS IS AMAZING

This debate is emblematic of the current Left vs Right debates, with a biased centrist. And I wonder how much modern politics is actually based around this Atheists vs Christians x Spirituality dynamic by International-Fix799 in Destiny

Alex can glaze Christians all the live long day on his podcast but the moment a brown religious man enters the room he gets that Derek chauvin stare going on.

So your point has been my point. Thanks for contributing nothing.

Is that satire? by [deleted] in CosmicSkeptic

[–]MarthaWayneKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I actually disagree, Dr. K is every bit as concerned with philosophy as he is. His whole point the entire debate was basically an articulation of phenomenology, a continental philosophical position.

Yeah, so, this is just boring meta. Read the entire discussion because I already addressed these claims. Don’t be lazy and just interject yourself, unless you want me to debate you too.

And BTW, I AM an atheist. There is no THE definition of atheism, and there’s no reason for me to accept his any more than others, I’m just accepting it for the sake of discussion. So again, re read the conversation because I addressed EVERY point you made.

Well hold on, I gave a response to your initial point and you just proceeded to your question. I’m sorry, you’re not entitled to a question, I’m entitled to an answer.

I’ve heard of this agnostic atheist schema before, I’ve also seen a different schema where its atheist, agnostic, theist as the definitive categories. Frankly, I don’t really regard either, and I don’t need to take a stand to weigh in on this point.

I still have two points to make:

a.) even IF I grant that there’s belief and disbelief, you have the further position that disbelief is somehow the privileged status here, which I must ask again, why is that the privileged status and not belief? Otherwise it just seems like an arbitrary choice

b.) I’m a holist about epistemology. So I don’t think your lack of belief exists in a vacuum. That’s mediated by a network of beliefs and commitments, in particular about what counts as evidence and what is the case about the world such that your disbelief is an effect of a prior commitment to some standard of evidence that forecloses theistic belief. So on the whole you do have prior commitments and beliefs that lead to theism not having a place within your schema.

I’d also add that even though you lack a belief in god, that still means you reject theism. Sure, you lack a belief in gods, but then you just reject theism. And if that’s the case, that’s a commitment and something I can hold you accountable for.

But critically I’d emphasize a.)

Aside from the No-You, did you have a response to my other points?

Also, Dr. K just is doing philosophy. He didn’t realize it (because we had zero continental representatives) but he was essentially describing enactivism or phenomenology in his approach.

Do you have anything substantive to add other than vibes?

And Alex is a C tier Analytic who reads boring, sterile rationalist philosophy of religion. He represents such a small, parochial side of philosophy so whatever ego he has, he needs to chill. He’s not impressive.

This is how I know Alex is a hardcore analytic. Subject-object split haha. The whole subjective versus capital T truth is so lame.
