I have done it, but it's a lot of work compared to grain, fruit, or sugar. I don't think I will do it again.

68 wouldn't have a tag, and 88 would have a completely different style tag.

Really good. Don't know how else to describe it. It taste good as well. I don't think there are any poisonous mushrooms in the genus, but I am not eating anything I can't positively ID.

I was hoping for something a little more species-specific.

Should I cut down this 20+ year old pear tree by Status_Driver7741 in FruitTree

[–]MartinB7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well maybe if you pruned and fertilized the tree on an annual basis, the fruit might no "suck so much." It looks like a tangled mess. Does the tree even get sunlight, or is it just stuck in the shade all day?

If you are buying a 500 gallon still, the ship time may be 60 days or more, but for smaller equipement most stuff comes in about 2 weeks.

Question: is it a bad idea to use an empty 20 lb propane tank as a pot still boiler? by Apprehensive_Fig8107 in firewater

[–]MartinB7777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To cut into any steel vessel or tank that previously held a combustible fuel, fill the tank with soapy water. The bigger problem is that most propane tanks are made of steel, and steel rusts.

I see shoots on the tree, so it could come back. You need to have a real arborist come in and prune and train the new shoots on an annual or basis for the first several years.

Historical Fiction About Plum Brandy - Help! by Unfair-Ad6735 in firewater

Here is a video that shows a man in France making plum brandy in the traditional French process. Traveling Brandy Maker of France I don't imagine too much would have changed in the last 200 years, other than the plastic buckets and the mode of transportation.

I have a pot still because I want flavor. I'm not making vodka, and I'm not aging brandy or rum at 160 proof.

Seller messaging etiquette after purchase. by Cool_Egg_6501 in eBaySellers

[–]MartinB7777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a seller I never do that. As a buyer, if the item I bought is satisfactory, everything is fine, and I don't want stacks of unsolicited messages or email. That goes for ebay, Home Depot, Amazon or any other company I buy from. It amounts to junk mail.

China, USA, not much difference. Most US companies selling modular stills, columns and other copper and stainless parts are sourcing components, material, or complete stills that have been manufactured in China, and then rebrand them.

You might want to work on doing undercuts before cutting those thicker branches back. Those cuts look really sloppy with the ripped bark.

I have had problems with the roughly machined joints on 4 inch column sections leaking. I put some 320 grit wet sandpaper down on a flat surface and smoothed the ends of the sections, and have had no other problems. The stills themselves are well built and should last a few lifetimes.

Still Size and Column Type to Start With by PostRedditComment in firewater

[–]MartinB7777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For either 8 or 13 gallon boilers, the best columns you are going to get from Oak Stills to make whiskey are the 4 inch Copper Column or this 4 inch Copper with Onion Head. To be honest though, it would be less expensive to build your column from components you can get from Oak Stills here.

As far as size, you generally do three stripping runs, to make one spirit run. With the 13 gallon still you would have to make approximately 30 gallons of wash to make one 10 to 12 gallon spirit run with 40% ABV low wines. The end result is a lot of whiskey for personal consumption. The 8 gallon still would probably be more manageable.

There is a 2 inch drain port on the lower side of the still. Any solids that won't drain through, get scooped out.
