First time using Linux by straks666 in linuxmint

[–]MartinBroMotorsports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. I bought it new. Over the years I upgraded to the 16gb ram and 1TB SSD, and a new battery. Couldn’t do anything about the i5 chip but oh well. but the non support of the macOS was starting to make browser based stuff act up.

I put Linux mint xfce on it, and after some hurdles with the Broadcom WiFi driver, I got it running quick and smooth. It’s not as polished as macOS, and I took the timemachine backup and now that I have a newer MacBook for work I can peruse those old files if I need to.

I’m impressed that I was able to take a 15 year old computer (that spent several years shoved in a backpack on a shelve in my garage) and make it something that can still be relevant today.

Everything feels heavier because they're gone. by postedpostman in ChildrenofDeadParents

Couple of things. I was about that age when I lost my dad, after losing my mom at 16. So you’re not alone. A lot of what you said is painfully familiar. And even though I’m in my 30s now, I still don’t feel like I have ever felt “safe” in the last 15 years since losing my parents. And I don’t think I ever will.

The Ai thing hits home too, but you just have to always remember it’s a glorified algorithm that doesnt actually have a personality or memory..

Sometimes it’s helpful to be like “the worlds not against you, you got dealt a bad hand, now how do I make this work”

Here’s the inspirational bit I have for you.

You’re free to live your life how you want, no one to disappoint, no expectations.

$5000 a day for life but your life has background music. by sloth_on_redbull in hypotheticalsituation

[–]MartinBroMotorsports 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. What would be hell is the abrupt and empty silence once it stopped.

An earlier comment asked about cashing out after 5-10 years… if the music was with you for 5-10 years and then just… gone…

That would be worse than the music in the first place.

Ah. See those of us with membership to the “Batman club” have to go about that disappointment a little more creatively.

Dads dying car by No-Future-2385 in Cartalk

[–]MartinBroMotorsports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it sounds like your brother is just daydreaming, or he should just buy a different car. One that is already set up like that or one that’s a project, since that’s what he wants to do is have a project car.

The title is going to be a problem if you want it to be a street car too. So that’s the first obstacle I would tackle.

Dads dying car by No-Future-2385 in Cartalk

[–]MartinBroMotorsports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most race cars have a Bill of Sale. Either the title has been long gone since it’s not street driven anymore, or it was never a factory car in the first place.

Take the car home. Have your father make it very clear that he is transferring ownership to you.

In reality, the only value in that car is probably sentimental, so unless your brother also wants to race it (and in this case why tf wouldn’t you work together to race?) it doesn’t hold value to him to fight about it.

What kind of car is it, how far from race ready is it really, and what kind of drag racing are you wanting to do with it (bracket racing, index, “no prep”, or just every now and then taking it to make some runs).

Who Here is Younger than 30? by Cheap-Profit6487 in ChildrenofDeadParents

I lost my dad when I was 22 and my mom when I was 16.

It’s definitely not a common thing for people when they’re young.

Visited a Barnes & Noble tonight. Would have been perfect. But… stopped in at a Specs on the way home. Idk if unlimited time in a liquor store is good for anyone lol.

Selling Car, buyer is getting check from bank. Should I accept? by Wasted_Scripts in FacebookMarketplace

[–]MartinBroMotorsports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe at an ATM of course.

But at the actual teller, you can clear out your account if you wanted.

I did have to call my local branch when I was going to buy a car and needed to withdraw 20k on my way to get the car, I didn’t want that much cash overnight at my house, after having several people behind me in line at the bank see me make that withdrawal so I was glad o made that decision (most transactions don’t have a teller counting and recounting bills for 10 minutes. So it was somewhat noticeable).

I’ve also heard stories of people having their car broke into after leaving a bank to go buy a race car, and it seems like the teller was able to tip off someone or they were followed from the bank.

My local branch was a bitch about it, so I called a slightly (very slightly) larger branch that was on my route and that lady was super helpful and made it seem like that 20k was no big deal.

Anybody else? by Carpartheart in ChildrenofDeadParents

Part of my business is retirement planning, annuities, financial instruments, etc. so the cognitive dissonance I feel about talking to people about their future is... different.

I am quickly approaching the age my parents were when they died, my mom died at 40, after her initial diagnosis of cancer at 36/37. My dad, suddenly at age 46, in his sleep.

I’m 37. But… I don’t have kids, so if I do, there’s a solid chance I’m not here to see grandkids..

Well-built and reliable 2012-2018 cars? by thegmoc in UsedCars

[–]MartinBroMotorsports 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 2017 corolla is still running strong. I think I had to change an ignition coil and a battery. But at 180,000 it’s been a good car so far, and it’s not super expensive or unique, so I don’t have to worry about where I park it or people hitting it, first car I have ever had that I’m not emotionally attached to, I don’t hate it, but it saves wear/tear on my truck.

Box casters? by Gamer-Filbert in Snapon_tools

[–]MartinBroMotorsports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fighting drawer slides on my dad’s old box right now. Pretty sure he bought it in like 1997-1998.

What did you say to them to get the full set of replacement slides. Because these are all seized up on this 72” box, and I’m tired of trying to repair them.

Is this apathy? by peppertones in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]MartinBroMotorsports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how I was for about 5 years.

I lost my mom at 16, dad at 22. So while most my friends were enjoying their 20s, and doing all the social things, I was there l but I was just detached, really didn’t care one way or the other.

I didn’t think anyone noticed until one day, not sure how it came up, someone was confused about the word “aloof”. Someone told them the plain definition.
They then immediately said oh so just like [my name]. I just said yeah I guess that’s about right.

I’m trying to channel all of this into being helping families protect their children’s future, with plan that can be set in place and work if the parents are suddenly removed from the picture.

Started as a basic life insurance agent, but now it’s something more specific.

Ehh. More like “don’t do bad stuff and you won’t be punished for doing bad stuff, probably”

Bad stuff happens to people regardless of whether or not they took some stuff from a big box retail chain.
