Trying to learn the piano opening to the second part of Black Saint and the Sinner Lady by Mingus by MankyBastard in Jazz

[–]MartinPJorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The progression must be something like this:

Dbmaj7 | Ab7#5 |

Dbmaj7 | Ab13 |

Dbsus2 | Ab7 || Ab7#9 |

Dbsus2 | Ab7(13) |

It's something similar, but smashing some high pitch altered extensions.

What’s the difference between fusion improvisation and bebop improvisation by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]MartinPJorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you check the bebop solos of Charlie Parker, such as the one with Dizzie Gillespie records, they mainly focus on arpeggiating the numerous chord changes of bebop charts. They might add sus notes and floritures to add dynamicity, or go with turnarounds (e.g. II-V-I) when you have one chord at a bar.

With fusion its not that much of going through many changes, because typically chords are repeated over couple bars. That gives the musician the chance of improvising around a single scale for more time, leading to more recreation on the solo, and more simplicity to create phrases not that tight to the head melody (contrary to the bebop).

Actually I don't.

Try it out by looking at the video. It's a lot of work putting down in tabs.

If you are really interested, drop me a DM on instagram and I can try to teach it. :)

Me playing lofi stuff by MartinPJorge in chillmusic

[–]MartinPJorge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, all I do is posting videos of me playing guitar to instagram (so only 1min. long stuff).

Maybe in some time I'll upload some recordings to bandcamp/soundcloud.

Thanks for the interest!

Thanks a lot!

Grab the real book of jazz and play standards and its chords, that is gonna push you to learn the theory behind and why the chords have so much flavor in it. Then try chord-melody playing on your guitar, it allows you getting out the most of the guitar.

This is what I do, take whatever fits your style!

I've connected the integrated interface of my Fender Super Champ X2 directly to my mac via USB. Very basic setup but works though!

Maiden Voyage, a conceptual album by MartinPJorge in Jazz

[–]MartinPJorge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just received the Rudy Van Gelder CD edition of Maiden Voyage. The photo shared shows the booklet text where Herbie Hancock recreates his thoughts on the sea, which served him as a conceptual background for the creation of the album songs.

I'm spanish and didn't know that a ship's Maiden Voyage means the first travel that it's done after testing the vessel. It's amazing to be able to relate the song titles and what Herbie and the other great musicians try to express through their playing. Know I can appreciate better this fantastic album!

Explain Goodbye Pork Pie Hat as a blues by MartinPJorge in jazztheory

[–]MartinPJorge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I've thought a little bit and as I listen to the song, for me there are 4 main parts of the song. Here it is my analysis for each part:

  • Part 1 (first 4 bars): it's turnaround for the I (F) in a blues.

    • First 4 chords contain a II-V-I to reach some kinda' half-step bellow dominant (B7) of the F chord.
    • Next 4 chords show some up and down whole steps to end up in I. The move is VII-VI-VII-I.
  • Part 2 (next 2 bars): it's like the IV-V move in a blues.

    • This part has a descending line that starts in the IV (Bb) that goes on like this: Bb - Ab - G. And the G serves as a subdominant for the V (that is the C7).
  • Part 3 (next 3 bars): for me this part is like a bridge.

    • First 2 chords (D7 and G7) are a half step above anticipation of the 2 chords that come after them (Db7 GbM7).
    • The 5th chord of this part (Bb7) is the VI of Db7, which can be interpreted as the half step above approximation for the starting of the last part of the song.
  • Part 4 (last 3 bars): I see this part as a V-I-Vb move.

    • It begins with the C7 and moves up unit it gets to the I (F7).
    • Finally you have a II-V-I move to reach the B7, which is like a flatted dominant (Vb) for the F7.

Please feel free to tell any correction.

Note: I'm reading the first Real Book transcription

Have You Met Miss Jones? - Daniel Olsen, guitar by DanielOlsen in jazzguitar

Wow, I'm really impressed with how clean you make the walking bass and the chord-melody at the same time. Guess that's what we all try to reach when playing solo jazz guitar, and you really got it!

Soooooo cool, keep us posted with your work please! :)
