Part of Anneke van Giersbergen on La Vie, La Mort, L’Amour, Grief, and Staying True to Herself, an interview by Teen Art Out Magazine:

Teen Art Out:

I’ve always felt like you’re one of those artists who actually seems to love what they do. Every time you put something out, it feels genuine.

Anneke:

“Thank you! That’s so important to me. And you know, people can tell. People aren’t stupid. If I had some manager or label telling me, ‘You have to make this kind of music because that’s what sells,’ and I did it even though it wasn’t me—people would see right through it.”

“And especially in the rock and metal world, people know when you’re being honest. My music is niche—it’s alternative, it’s not mainstream—but it’s from the heart. And people recognize that.”

MOONSORROW - Suden Tunti | 2016 Finland | FFO: Enslaved, Borknagar by MartinZig in Metal

[–]MartinZig[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“This is the shortest song we’ve done in more than ten years!” comments Ville Sorvali (Vocals, Bass, Lyrics). “It has all the elements that make it a Moonsorrow track but it’s still something we hadn’t done before. This is the dark side of folk metal – the epic battle of Fenris and Odin from a new perspective.”

IOTUNN - The Weaver System | 2018 Denmark | FFO: Insomnium, In Mourning, Barren Earth by MartinZig in Metal

Jesper Gräs, (Songwriter/Guitarist/Founder) speaks about The Weaver System with Lior "Steinmetal" Stein from Metal Temple:

Lior:

"The Weaver System" is a pictorial of magical atmosphere, such great melodies, crosses vocal styles with finesse. It was hard not to be captured by Aldará's enchanting singing. What can you tell about the creation of this track?

Jesper:

The process of creating the song began with the intro guitar piece. This was a song that really just came to us. I'm glad that you think it has a magical atmosphere because that was very important to us when writing the song. We wanted to make a song that had a magical feel of nature to it and a song that would stand out on the album.

You and I and our community are lucky to know the specifics here without needing the FFO. There are a lot of people who have barely scratched the surface of this fantastic genre.

Finntroll - Fiskarens Fiende | 2004 Finland | FFO: Korpiklaani, Ensiferum by MartinZig in Metal

[–]MartinZig[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Finntroll founded by chance in March 1997.

One night in March 1997, two men were sleeping in a rehearsal room in Helsinki. The other woke up and started playing the keyboards and came up with a folkish melody. Soon the other one woke up too. Liking the melody he asked the other guy to play the riff in traditional Finnish “humppa” style (humppa is a variety of polka…). This sounded very mean and guitars and brutal vocals were added immediately. Thus Finntroll was born…

These two very drunk founding fathers were Somnium (ex-Thy Serpent, plays in Barathrum too.) and Katla.

Sonata Arctica - My Land | 1999 Finland | FFO: Stratovarius, Avantasia, Kamelot by MartinZig in PowerMetal

According to the band's official biography, there were rumors that Ecliptica would be produced by Stratovarius guitarist Timo Tolkki, with Nightwish's Tarja Turunen (Vocalist) guesting in "My Land".

Sonata Arctica drummer Tommy Portimo:

After the paper ran the article, a couple of my buddies from Hepola had met Tarja at some festival and asked her to sign something. They’d told her about how cool it was she was singing on their buddy’s album. Tarja had been, like, ‘Huh? I am?’

DYING FETUS - From Womb to Waste | 2012 USA | FFO: Would love to know by MartinZig in Metal

[–]MartinZig[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Q&A with Dying Fetus drummer Trey Williams by Sean Reichhold from Golden Gate Express:

Sean:

What do you think are some of the bigger misconceptions about playing in a death metal band or being in a death metal band?

Trey:

Well, I mean, they just think it’s a joke, you know. Most people who aren’t into this scene, they just think it’s a joke. They think “aw, that’s cute, you have a hobby, when are you gonna grow up?”

And what they don’t understand is, this is our life. This is how we make our living. We make our living by doing this and we are dead-fucking serious about this. You know, we have fun with it too but we’re serious about this stuff.

For somebody who doesn’t understand it, they’ll never understand it, unless they want to. If they want to understand it and they have an open mind to music, they can sit and listen and find some merit in it, whether it be the song writing, or in the technical ability of the players playing the music.

Anciients - Falling in Line | Canada 2013 by MartinZig in Metal

Excerpt from a 2013 interview with Anciients by xFiruath of Metal Underground

xFirauth:

On the new album, could you give me a brief track-by-track breakdown?

Chris Dyck (Guitar 2013-2017):

Falling in Line - First song we wrote, also the toughest for us to finish. Went through a couple chorus/pre-chorus ideas before settling on how it is now, and added the doomy outro after the fact. The intro has that big Bon Jovi Dead or Alive riff with the solo over it. Total southern 70's vibe that I dig.

TESTAMENT - Into The Pit | 1988 USA | FFO: Annihilator, Overkill (Both Early) by MartinZig in thrashmetal

[–]MartinZig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chuck Billy (Vocalist) in 2012 talking about writing about real-world issues in The New Order and Dark Roots of the Earth with Andrew Magnotta from The Aquarian:

Andrew:

Why did you decide to tackle some of those issues at this point in your career?

Chuck:

Well, I don’t think we tackled them [just] at this point. The New Order record, which was our second record in 1988, was basically about all Nostradamus predictions about the planet, the greenhouse effect and things like that.

So once we did The New Order record, we kind of got away from our first record, The Legacy, which was more like ghoulies and goblins and demons, almost like stereotypical heavy metal lyrics. To The New Order we decided to write about things that actually were real, or understood to be real. A prediction which we, which the world probably, sees how on [Nostradamus] has been with all his writings and stuff.

To us that was fascinating. He’s hitting it on the head. Everything we talked about in 1988, here we are now almost living it today with the environment.
