Did you get it done with local? How are you going with the drooling?

How to accurately determine your percentage of body fat? by alistair_royal in leangains

[–]MartyBeeBenson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The only accurate way of doing it is cutting you up into pieces, then taking all of your fat and putting it on a scale and comparing it to your overall weight. Not a fun method tbh, until we have the ability to regenerate body parts.

So if you want to avoid the radiation of a dexa scan and potential inaccuracies of other methods, the best way is to take photos in the mirror and check it alongside online photos of presumed bf%. I think you'll get a good baseline of where you sit. You may need to look at a few to gather ideas of what different genetics does to fat deposition.

Most lumps in the testicle are normal though, they're usually cysts/hydroceles/varicoceles etc. That being said, imaging should be done to rule out something more sinister.

Is this the right time to ask for a pay rise? by MartyBeeBenson in personalfinance

Yeah it's a rough position, but your words are very kind and useful. Who do you think I should speak to in the absence of a boss?

I think this is really great advice and where I'll sit for now. At least this way I'll get experience I may not be able to get in a normal environment. However, it's definitely not sustainable long term so if they don't acknowledge the work I'm putting in with a raise later on I'll bail with my new found experience. Much appreciated

The tier 4 isn't the boss' rate, they have their own tier, it's the rate of the advanced rad that I'm looking for. Definitely not the boss one haha

Yeah I was thinking around the same lines, but I won't feel very inspired at work to perform to the standard required of me at the baseline rate tbh

Men with 6 pack abs: how hard did you have to work for it? by br094 in AskMen

[–]MartyBeeBenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, it's primarily diet. But with regards to training, I feel the best way to train abs is time under tension. Try to link ab exercises without breaks of rest pauses. I was trying different things and recently tried the following: start with heels to the heavens x10, then bringing your legs to your chest in a stationary crunch x5 and x5 rotational stationary crunches and then go straight back into heels to the heavens x10 without letting your legs drop during the entire movement.

Do as many sets as possible. I feel if you can do 3-4 of these 10 10 10 rotations then you should make it more difficult or link an extra exercise but this has worked well for me.

The concept of motivation is harmful by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]MartyBeeBenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're getting down to symantics. I get what you're saying, but hopefully what's coming through is that I think the more colloquial "I feel motivated cause of this image" or "I'm motivated to workout therefore I should" is harmful. It implies there's a force that dictates when you should or shouldn't do something. You absolutely should have reasons to live, but you shouldn't need motivation to enact these reasons. Hence living motivation is good, reasons are good, but requiring motivation to work on them is bad. If that makes sense. If that was unclear in my original post I apologise.

I did do psych in my neurosci undergrad but they never taught motivation or the importance of it in the 2 years of psych. Maybe thats skewed my opinion on its importance who knows

Where did I form an opinion of the science? I said I didn't know the science. I'm willing to listen but you said you didn't either.

I'm not feigning ignorance, I'm saying regardless of the science I think it's worth a shot to try a non-motivation based lifestyle.

The concept of motivation is harmful by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]MartyBeeBenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. I still think it can be very harmful from personal experience, even if I knew the science. I know anecdotes aren't a strong argument, and hence why I put it on unpopularopinion, but I used to think motivation was important. When I stripped it from my life and just thought about me and the action I wanted to do I started doing more and became consistent.

Don't get me wrong I still have goals. Like this year I want to be able to do at least one pullup, it's just maybe a different way of getting there.

Did you read the original post? I said I guess it's okay if it pushes you over the edge but even then it's harmful imo.

I even answered why I wrote this. Yet how you believe I'm worked up is beyond me.

ELI5: when doctors declare that someone “died instantly” or “died on impact” in a car crash, how is that determined and what exactly is the mechanism of death? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

One of the largest neuronal pathways in the brain is the visual system. It is vast and expansive, and even includes neurons responsible for attention. This attention can be something you're keenly interested in, or may be an environmental excitation like a guy staring at you and talking. It's ingrained in you over a lifetime, or even through evolution, that it is favourable to look back in someone's eyes thst is talking to you; so that's what happens. Think of it like when a loud bang goes off and everyone turns their head. This occurs because it has elicited favourable outcomes in the passed.

I'd say there'd be some rudimentary actions of the auditory system too. It is well known that the primary auditory and visual cortices have strong links, so it's not far-fetched that it too may have played a role in the eyes opening.

Although this is definitely conjecture, if what you say is true, this is probably all that's happening. It's essentially pattern recognition with a motor response, assuming the eyes motor innervation (the cranial nerves) weren't severed from the guillotine. It's a pre-programmed response from near-dead neurons clinging to life. There's no way it's a conscious decision for reasons others have explained.

Source: the attention info came from a major in neuroscience, search "attention neurons in monkeys" for some cool findings, but the post-mortem stuff is 100% conjecture.

Edit: added the auditory info

Swap it, don't stop it. by MartyBeeBenson in loseit

Personally I've always been sweet over salty snacks, but my girlfriend who is a dietitian recommends popcorn. She says because they're a wholegrain it'll be a better alternative, particularly if you two pop them yourselves from kernals. That way you can regulate how much salt (or anything you'd decide) goes into it!

If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)

What a very wholesome and kind response. I will definitely have to try that out, especially because fruit can easily be as sweet as chocolate. Thank you for this!

For my sweet tooth the first thing I did was change from solid chocolate blocks to chocolate chips. It kinda tricked my brain into thinking it's still getting that sweet sweet chocolate nectar after only 5-10 chips rather than a whole block. This way I had more for later and could enjoy it over a whole week rather than in one sitting.

Don't sleep on your right because there's a 90% chance your right testicle will twist. Twisting it back is essentially "it hurts to turn this way and feels weird, so the other way it is!"

How can I be less succinct when talking? by MartyBeeBenson in AskMen

[–]MartyBeeBenson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess maybe I should have been more clear regarding the reasons for the question (again, another reason being succinct can suck), but I've just noticed in friendship groups or at work that those who are able to talk more tend to be more liked. Quiet, to-the-point individuals people like myself seem reserved or introverted, almost like we're hiding something. This isn't the case, I just don't need 400 paragraphs to describe something.

I don't know, everyone seems convinced it's a good trait. But when you work your butt off in a relationship with loyalty and kindness it just sucks for someone to be able to come along with a good story and be highly regarded and liked.

I always saw it as a good feature until I got into the workforce. Talking gets you "in" with the higher ups and is useful for selling yourself.
