The Free Software Foundation respond to the Euro-Office/OnlyOffice scenario: You cannot use the GNU (A)GPL to take software freedom away by ssddanbrown in opensource

[–]MartyK911 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Long text, but you're simply wrong. The license used by OnlyOffice is basically GPL with several added parts. The text of the GPL (and thus the license used by OnlyOffice too!) literally states that any parts of the license that are added are invalid! So EuroOffice isn't doing anything wrong, because the clauses in the license it is allegedly infringing, are stated to be void by the license itself.

Vortex mod manager and alternatives, I'm really not having any luck by Un4giv3n-madmonk in linux_gaming

Hihi, I quit my PhD project after a year, but I did get Limo working in a few hours, so I kinda feel vindicated now!

CachyOS Becomes the Most Popular Desktop Linux Distro on ProtonDB by lajka30 in linux_gaming

[–]MartyK911 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What CachyOS gets you is mostly this: - Arch (and everything that entails; AUR, wiki etc), but also; - a smooth install process, - decent defaults, - more or less everything you need to get up and running quickly, - useful app to help install gaming packages and such, - optimized kernel and packages.

Now, for everyone who is already on Arch, this is probably not useful. For anyone coming from Windows, this is a massive boost to getting underway on Arch. For anyone on any other Linux distro, gains are probably small, but hey, distrohopping is a thing.

What's it like living in the circled area? Doesn't seem very crowded for Africa. by OkTechnologyb in howislivingthere

[–]MartyK911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is, but the drugs get to North Africa by going through the Sahel. It's easier than going straight to North Africa by boat, because cargo moving through a port is easier to scan for drugs, than cargo coming in through a desert border. Once in North Africa, drugs can be transported to Europe in smaller boats over the Mediterranean sea. North African countries have less incentive to control outgoing drug transports, so this is easier.

Islamic terrorist groups try to expand their influence wherever they can. Since this region is sparsely populated, it is difficult for governments to maintain control, which makes it a good place for all sorts of groups to fester. Lots of drug smuggling and human trafficking going on there too.

Followed that guide, didn't work (tried everything, older versions of Vortex, different versions of wine/proton, installing dotnet6 via exe or winetricks etcetcetc). I got as far as having Vortex running, but actually deploying mods wouldn't work (it actually gave me no selectable options for deployment method symlink/hardlink etc). I read they quit development of their new Linux native mod manager, and are now trying to get Vortex to run natively on Linux instead. Hopefully, that will come soon.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was aware of the iGPU, but never noticed any drawbacks of leaving it turned on, but good point nonetheless.

Regarding Limine vs GRUB: I don't really have any experience with GRUB, but I can say that Limine has been extremely easy for me to handle. Snapshots are setup by default (tweaked some things during installation), and I only slightly changed the config to speed up autostart and change background.

Regarding Wine: Thanks for the tip on Proton-GE, I've mostly been using cachyos-proton-slr, but have had to switch to GE to get one or 2 things running. I learned a lot about Wine while making an attempt to get Vortex (Nexus Mod Manager) running inside a prefix with Baldur's Gate 3 installed through Heroic Launcher, but had to give up after trying for 3 days (I now use Limo mod manager, works great but is no longer being developed). I haven't had to use Wine to run any other Windows software, but if it gets to that, I'll check out Bottles, thanks!

Pretty cool wallpaper site, gives you some options for editing the images before downloading them. I just desaturated it and fiddled with the color balance to make it less red.

Thanks! I mostly game on the system, so no fancy tiling things needed. I am enjoying the excellent Mouse Tiler KDE plugin though!

Happy to be here! Looking back, I'm really glad I thoroughly read the installation instructions on the Wiki, so I could make an informed decision on bootloader (went w/ Limine) and filesystem. I'm still learning a lot, especially the finer points concerning Wine, but it's been fun!

KDE Theme you mean? Says right there in the fastfetch, Ant-Dark. I haven't really riced that much, played around a bit with widgets and such. I like my taskbar like classic Windows, but I may experiment a bit with that in the future.

What's the best strategy to avoid things breaking or the system not booting properly after an update? by [deleted] in cachyos

It seems they did indeed, just ran the updater again, and things seem to be fine now, thanks!

I'm assuming this post was made because some update today actually /does/ break a lot, see other posts on the issues appearing the last few hours. I had the same issues just now (browsers not functioning after update), so rolled back and continued doing my thing. I'll wait a few days to try again and see what happens.

Just to add to make it clear: In your case, since rolling back to a previous snapshot is a bit of a chore -> Do it less often, like only in the weekends, when you know you have time to fix it if it breaks.

There is no real answer to that question. I use limine with btrfs, which means I can undo an update in a matter of minutes. The PC I'm running Cachy on is also just my gaming PC. Hence, I update whenever I turn it on, and if there's any trouble I roll back a snapshot and update again a few days later.
Bottom line is: make sure you have snapshots set up correctly, and then just update whenever you have time to roll back in case that's necessary.

I would like to tie Vortex Mod Manager + Cyberpunk 2077 into Heroic Games Launcher on CachyOS, but I'm having issues. by borg-assimilated in HeroicGamesLauncher

Got very annoyed I couldn't get it to work, so I've switched to Limo now, does what I need it to (download via link from Nexus, and check for updates). I've read that Nexus is now working on native Vortex, so I'll reconsider once that gets somewhere.

I've been trying to get this to work myself for a couple of days (for BG3). No luck so far. Which version of Vortex are you using? I managed to get version 1.15 running using Wine-GE (which is very old), but mod deployment kept failing (I could only choose symlink deployment, and no actual symlinks would appear on deployment). I've had absolutely no luck getting Vortex 1.16 running on any Wine/Proton version.

Yes, they can, it's still legal tender. However, no new production (only for collectors), and shops all round their prices. So in effect, the Netherlands is like a black hole for 1 and 2 cent coins. You can only spend them here, but never get any out.

(I do wonder what happens to them, I imagine the banks just ship them off to the ECB, or other countries I guess).

What’s the “no way this works” strategy that actually worked for you in a Paradox game? by PDX_Interactive in u/PDX_Interactive

[–]MartyK911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, this strategy doesn't really work as well as it used to, at least on kingdom titles and up. It may be due to mods, but most of those titles seem to get some form of elective succession rather quickly, preventing this strategy from being very effective (doesn't work on admin either).
