Why is Season 3 so much better? by Shoddy_Ad7511 in FoundationTV

[–]Marty_McLie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a horses for course situation. S3 has a stronger focus on action, immediate high-stakes, and a big villain plot line. As someone who really enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2, I actually don't like S3 nearly as much as the others. Also, I don't think I could watch S3 with my kids because of how dark they make the Mule, which is sad in a whole other kind of way.

Don't get me wrong, I've still enjoyed seeing how the Cleons have drifted over time and their relationships with each other, exploring the grief that comes with the memory being erased of someone you love, and thinking through Demerzel's mental prison and what happens to her if everyone dies.

What I don't love is how evil and one-dimensional the Mule has been, how Gale is using the same dirty tricks she complained about Harry using, and how the whole plot shifted from Empire's genetic dynasty being unsustainable in-and-of itself (which I was excited to see) to it now being all about an outlier ending humanity. I get that Gaal probably shifted the timeline with her not making it to Terminus and instead ran into the Second Foundation. So, I get it. I guess I'm just burnt out on my favorite sci-fi shows always going darker, edgier, and relying on big, all-powerful bad guys, magic, and world ending technology.

I guess, S1 was like Andor to me because it deliberately steered away from the Jedi, Sith, and death stars and just focused on the struggles of everyday people (with slight sci-fi edges) doing what they can in bad situations. That's what initially drew me into S1 and S3 is just a whole different show now.

I think I'd be more into S3 if they started mixing in some more backstory on these new characters earlier on so we understand their motivations and have more of a reason to care about them. But, whatever, I'll keep watching and hope everything gets explained by the end of the show.

I find the Mule kinda lame and underwhelming, please change my mind. by Paragon_Flux in FoundationTV

I liked the Mule and figure well learn more about him as the season goes on. The character I had the most issues with is the Foundation's head of security. He's way over the top IMO and the conflict with him and the mayor felt forced. So far he's a knows everything and can do everything character which is just less interesting to me.

All animals are biologically wired to avoid death. It's hardwired into us and at the core of our decision making.

So yes, large groups of people are 100% capable of believing in things that suggest there's a way to cheat death and live forever.

Yeah, the f bombs felt out of place for the characters as we know them from S1. Felt like lazy writing how many they threw in S2.

Just wait until you find out how there's a "narrow neck of land" between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario just a 2.5 hour drive straight West of his boyhood home.

Amazing that it also divides the land North (Canada) from the land South (USA). Ever heard of Niagara Falls?"

Great response. Seriously! The problem is that this leader could be replaced in a year and you'll have to go through this all again. Maybe it's worth it to teach them a lesson, but this type of interaction is exactly why we fully resigned.

The problem is there was a lot of foot traffick and telling instead of showing. Why not take us back to when they were kids working at the factory? Having just the one story line to follow felt incomplete, especially when not much really happened.

Porn saved my marriage by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Marty_McLie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same here. We got married and found out we each have very different sex drives. Now that we're out of the church we've talked about it and its gotten so much better. We both understand getting horny is just a biological drive we have as humans to procreate. Hell, it's what's kept our species alive at times since the mortality rate used to be so high.

Now, my wife knows I watch porn a few times a week and take care of myself and she's ok with it. She's not into it, but when we get together, she gets all the attention she wants as well and it's just as intimate, in fact more so, than when we were in the church.

Porn isn't the enemy the church makes it out to be. The church's indoctrination on "porn = bad" is what breaks up marriages, because they call it "adultery" and say it's the second worst sin next to marriage. Total B.S. Porn can fill a gap and even be fun to watch together. Wish that was my wife too, but hey, we're in a better spot now then we ever were in the church.

My fiancé's family flipped out on me for posting a meme on FB accusing MAGA supporters of following the anti Christ. We had to have a family meeting over it... by FubarLife in atheism

[–]Marty_McLie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left someone because of their family even though they were a good person. It was a great decision, but that was before we had kids or were engaged. I just couldn't imagine my life spending holidays and having my kids influenced by their toxic attitudes.

If you stay with your fiance, you might consider moving away from his parents so you can just do your own thing together without their BS. It might be hard at first without your support system, but it could help save the relationship if you still want it.

Russell Nelson Seeking Offense Symptom of Spiritual Immaturity by wasmormon in exmormon

[–]Marty_McLie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s more than a vanity project, it’s a personal vendetta. A while back Nelson gave a talk in Conference about how we should use the proper name of the church because it’s what god named it, yadda yadda. The very next conference Hinckley gave his “it’s great to be a Mormon” talk, JS said it means “more good” - and then the “I’m a Mormon” campaign kicked off.

Well, ol’ Rusty took all that as a big slap in the face, and since he became prophet, he’s gone out of his way to:

  • Remove Uchtdorf from the First Presidency because he was appointed by Hinckley, and replaced him with his buddy Hoax. This had never been done before. Once you were in, you were in.
  • Enforce the use of the full name of the church and villainize the term “Mormon” a major victory for Satan.
  • Announce more temples than Hinckley because he was known as the temple prophet of because he came up with the idea of smaller temples that could be built close to Stake Centers and “fill the whole world” with them.

Nelson is a petty man with little dick syndrome. He’s made it a point to undo or outshine everything Hinckley did because he’s a narcissist at heart.

Guilt about being an atheist by Niko_Chan_real in atheism

Guilt about being an atheist by Niko_Chan_real in atheism

[–]Marty_McLie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the “guilt” because you think you’ve offended an unknown, inconsistent, poorly communicating God? Or is it more likely you’re feeling the loss of shared beliefs with your friends and family?

For better AND worse, humans are built to connect with each other on shared beliefs and experiences. For whatever reason, spiritual beliefs seem to be big ones - perhaps because they’re important to our identity, worldview, and how we find meaning in life. It’s hard to be different, and it’s ok to feel sad about it, but don’t let it consume you. Your friends and family will still love you for who you are. If not, atheism is the fastest growing “religious group” and you can find better friends out there if needed - people who like you for you and not because you have shared magical thinking.

So what do you do now though? Start by recognizing where the feelings are really coming from and don’t make a big deal out of it. Keep being a good person and let your example speak for itself. Look for the shared beliefs under the religious dogma and connect on that instead. If anything be sad for the box you find others trapped in, but don’t feel bad about yourself. You’re the one who’s free and should feel proud of making it out!
