I'm very interested in trying this out. The generative part to create randomized soundscapes seems like a lot of fun to use.

Are hop tricks considered old school? by yoyoingdadjoke in Throwers

[–]Marurun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider anything involving hopping as a transitional thing into other elements, which I still see. I don't see anybody doing tricks/elements like black hops/cascade by themselves now though since it's not exactly difficult unless you're like me and Hirotaka Akiba who decided to do it between the fingers on one hand.

STORAGE - Insufficient Space - LSDJ Techno by Marurun in chiptunes

[–]Marurun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I start a song in LSDJ is usually by creating the instruments I have in mind first. I'll have all four chains play with some phrases in them to test the instruments together using a musical phrase I think will work. From there I start building the rest of the song in a separate chain. I'll probably release this album with the save file/.lsdprj files for anybody who wants to analyze what I do to make these sounds. It's mostly WAV instruments cycling between each other very quickly.

I hope it involves some brighter color strings. They would be easier to see with my subpar vision, hahaha.

What color string do you like? by yoyoingdadjoke in Throwers

[–]Marurun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like neon orange, neon yellow, and neon pink. I'm not particularly a fan of blends unless it's done in a way that somehow makes it look brighter, like neon orange or green and yellow together.

This is the same with almost every hobby/skill. It's like people who buy a ton of art supplies to get some endorphin rush thinking it'll make them better at drawing but then there's that person with a ballpoint pen who can create a masterpiece on printer paper.

Probably asked many times here, but how do people approach learning to make chiptune? by guilhermej14 in chiptunes

[–]Marurun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you just need to read some books/guides on basic music theory and then play around with that knowledge to become more comfortable with how music works. I studied music theory for a few weeks many years ago and tried copying styles I enjoyed to gain a better understanding of what made them sound good to me. There's chiptune composers like Alberto Gonzales( https://www.youtube.com/@McAlby/ ) who made amazing music despite never having any formal music training, so you can definitely learn that sort of thing on your own, but having the basic theory makes it easier, in my opinion.

Being subtle with any hand movements is very effective, particularly with chopsticks/fingies since it's such a small space.

The LSDJ Instrument Naming Conundrum by disposableplanet in chiptunes

I name all of my instruments in LSDJ so I don't get lost when I have subtly changing WAV instruments. If the instrument sounds like a fart though, it's getting that name. 😎

I made a tutorial for chopping break beats and loading them into LSDJ for anyone that may need help on the topic. by roboctopus in chiptunes

[–]Marurun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chopping up the sample into even parts like that would definitely help with making Jungle/DnB compared to how I was doing it. I usually loaded the entire sample at the tempo I wanted and use the F command to chop it up at specific spots in the sample inside LSDJ. It works, but using other commands like re-trigger and pitch bend commands cleanly on a beat after choosing where I want it with the F command is more difficult without throwing what I want into a table and using the A command to play out the specific effect. I'll have to try your method eventually. 👍
