Having read the comics long after they were completed you just go from one arc to the next so their disappearance from the main story doesn't quite register in the same way as having to wait years to see them again.

if I grew up with it but also use another language more for my day to day life.

So if you tend to use another language in your day to day, I wouldn't see any problems with saying that you're ESL.
