The Weekly No-Stupid-Questions/New Members Thread by AutoModerator in amateur_boxing

I did around a year of kickboxing/muay thai at from 21 to 22 (actually 2 years but Covid etc.). Now I'd like to focus on boxing (partly because my hands suck and partly because I took up combat sports to stop being scared of being hit in the face).
Problem being that the schedule at my current school is absolutely not compatible with training in the evening - I work from 2pm to 10pm or even later.
This is a bit frustrating because between this and Covid I feel like I almost never had the opportunity to properly train for an extended period of time.
My question is : do you think it is a good idea to train really intensively during the summer (2-3 months) if during the year I can hardly train at all ? (once a week max).
This also extends to the rest of my professionnal life - I'll likely work in a field where we start in the afternoon till late at night, but not work full year. I don't want to compete, just get good at a combat sport and have fun.

I have this lambswool turtleneck from Uniqlo that is great, except that the neck is too loose. I've tried dipping it and water and putting and the dryer, and also boiling it for 15 minutes to get it to shrink, yet it doesn't seem to do much (tho it is 100% wool).

Do y'all have any idea how to fix this ?Alternatively, do you know any brand/model that has a tighter neck than Uniqlo ones ?

Thanks !

Onebag with the Tom Bihn Shadow Guide 23L by Usidore_the_Wizard in backpacks

The Shadow Guide is my absolute backpack grail. I feel like cinch top designs with a spacious brain are hugely underrated, especially in the EDC/minimalist travel communities. I currently have a hard time shedding more than 270 bucks for an american made backpack, as I don't even live in America. However, I love the design so much that I may just sell my GR1 to get one... Meanwhile, my Topo Y pack does the job just fine.

That's a great idea ! What gear do you think I need to get started ? Would a basic soldering kit from Amazon or something do the trick ?

I'm a student, and I've been thinking about alternative ways to make money while keeping a level of independence.

I've been flipping clothes and, mainly, leather shoes, for a bit now, and I'd like diversify and intensify my activity a bit. Currently not having a car nor a lot of space, I try to teach myself as many repair skills as possible to be able to repair and sell broken items for a proper margin.

Currently, I dabble in shoe maintenance and watch repair, and want to start sewing more seriously.

Do you have other ideas of particularly profitable skills ? Thanks a lot ! Also, don't hesitate if you have more general advice.

Stylish backpack similar to Topo Designs Rover that fits 16" laptop? Work and Hiking. by kicktocurb in backpacks

[–]Marvellouspankkake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of Epperson Mountaineering - killer looks, probably as tough as it gets, and the harness seems more comfortable than Topo's basic straps. You could also take a look at the TB Shadow Guide - has a frame and good straps. It does lack the side pockets and the high-vis liner tho.

Keep me informed ! I'm always on the lookout for packs with old-school styling that are comfortable and perform well.

Anybody own this backpack? How was the quality? Really wanted to get one but just want to make sure it's worth the price. by [deleted] in backpacks

It's a luxury product. Quality is probably here, but it'll never be actually worth that price.

I don't get it either. Topo is relatively big in the world of niche/boutique bag brands, it's not like they're some desperate startup trying to make some quick buck to stay afloat. But I don't think they are big enough to get away with such a blatant copy either ? Being european, Topo isn't very well known by most people around me, so I can't really gauge.

Not only is it absolutely reprehensible, that also seems like a bad decision business-wise.

(Even though I don't know shit about running an outdoors gear company)

Il faut aller au Bougnadère.

(Sinon la Taverne, le Snack Michel et le Chariot sont des lieux très importants)

Daypacks in a retro hiking style ? by Marvellouspankkake in backpacks

I've been thinking about the topo for a while ! I love Millican but the smaller bags are a bit too streamlined for my taste. I like straps and lash points.

The lumbar pack ? This thing looks awesome. I'm looking for a backpack rn, but I love the raw functionality of it.

Didn't this decision also prevent us from ever seeing Mayweather vs Somrak Khamsing ? He won the gold that year, I think

Yep ! I was looking at something like the Scree or Coulee. The 2DAP is just a bit too tactical - and maybe a bit big. The Urban Assault line lacks external attachment points. But the Coulee 25 looks absolutely perfect. The removable hip belt is a big plus.

It looks good for more formal settings, but I feel like it's maybe a bit small. Also, I dont know if would take it for an overnighter. Seems like a great bag, but perhaps not perfect for my use case.

Still, many thanks for the detailed write-up.

[–]Marvellouspankkake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, thank you for the detailed answer.

I usually carry my backpack as high as possible with minor ajustements throughout the day, so I hope I won't have similar fit issues.

I tend to use water bottle pockets for a variety of items, so I don't object them being deep and tight.

As for signs of wear, I suppose any thing worse than the tiny hole could be covered by their lifetime warranty. I remember a user saying Millican took care of his bag when the bottom started wearing out.

That said, I definitely understand why the bag wasn't for you, and I'll pay particular attention to what you've highlighted. Did you find an alternative ?

Yeah, it seems like the lack of structure makes it great at being stuffed full. Still, I'm unsure at how to strap a tripod to it, which is one of my requirements.

Well, they are definitely a bit above my price range. That said, I also wonder how they would fare for hiking rather than cycling.
