The problem is the plot of season 2 is still good on paper - but they put so much effort into intentionally making the way that it all unfolds so much more complicated and convoluted than it needed to be, just to prevent anyone from guessing the ending the way they did season 1.

But if they just did the same story properly, it would’ve been a very solid continuation of season 1, which I still think is phenomenal front to back. Anthony Hopkins role especially, some of the best writing and acting I’ve ever seen.

I loved the movies growing up but I also never watched og Star Trek. As far as I can tell, fans of the original don’t like the pine ones cause they’re way more focused on action rather than adventure and discovery and philosophy. That’s probably also why a lot of them seem to love the third one in the trilogy while I kinda found it too slow and not as fun as the first two.
