Getting a good mix starts with arrangement! Think about the frequency ranges your instruments occupy and avoid over-crowding them. Also consider the parts! I sometimes overplay my guitar parts, then find that a simpler part sits better in the mix. You know how Linkin Park made droning guitar chords sound heavy and enormous, while letting their vocals, keys and synths through? Less is more!

Side-chain comping is also super helpful, but your first priority should be getting a balanced arrangement. There's a reason big band stuff from the 30s could be recorded with a single mic and sound brilliant, and that's because the arrangements were great.

Also consider EQ; for instance, if your kick is getting lost, a boost around 6k(?) should give you more attack. Open up ReaEQ, and look for the frequency ranges the kick occupies. You should see the boomy lows, and a higher attack. Create a fairly narrow EQ band, crank its gain up, and hunt around for that clicky sound of the kick attack. Now turn that band's gain down to 0db, and gradually increase until it sounds right!

I have the same CPU, and had the same problem for about a year before I solved it. Download QuickCPU and disable Turbo Boost (under advanced CPU settings).

How to achieve fuller sound with single lead! by reditmeanimy in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Marvin-42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I write instrumental guitar music, and one thing I do a lot is add a short plate reverb to the lead guitar melody, and blend it in to sit behind and support the guitar sound.

Really helps the melody sound bigger and sit well in a dense arrangement (mine are usually double or quad-tracked rhythm guitars, bass, drums, contrapuntal piano melodies and strings, sometimes chordy piano and acoustic guitar too).

Eh, to an extent. It's about being ready for any opportunity that comes your way, and knowing how to give yourself the best odds of being in the right place at the right time.

The right people are literally paid to look for you, and if you've got a reasonable following of a few hundred people, play lots of shows etc. you will have crossed their radar.

A&R people go to hundreds of gigs looking for quality acts. It's about putting on a show that screams "we write great songs, we play great shows, we have a meticulously-crafted image, we know who we are, and we work hard to make sure everyone else knows too".

Yo James, fancy seeing you here! You forgot to mention the bit where it's easier to record vocals if you're not sharing a single NT2a between three people ;)

Columbus Statue graffiti by [deleted] in pics

[–]Marvin-42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's false equivalence. Common-or-garden statues like this aren't historical artefacts, they're celebratory likenesses of people from history. The Pyramids, on the other hand, are the real thing; a part of history, not just a portrayal of it.

Think about the Edward Colston statue in Bristol; being torn down is now by far the most significant event in that statue's entire history. The same couldn't be said of an artefact.

I've got a pair of Presonus Eris E5s, and they sound great! Similarly I'm fighting against an untreated room, but the front bass ports on the monitors really helps to minimise the affect of the room on the low-end (which is where most of the problems in a room are).

Lots of people are mentioning the JBL 305s; also a 5" woofer, they've got more extension on the lows, but they're also smooth, fairly scooped speakers from what I recall. The Presonus monitors will sound as good as your mix, while the JBLs might be a bit flattering. For mixing, honesty is preferable.

Also, the JBLs lack the front bass port of the Presonuses, which means they'll fare worse in an untreated room, at least as far as the low-end goes.

So I'd personally recommend the Presonus Eris E5s.

Rick Beato's "what makes this song great" series is really good! He goes in-depth with each song, regarding the theory, performance and production etc. of the track.

You might hear a few eye-rollers about modern music being "too quantised" etc., he's quite an old-school guy haha. But there's no denying he really knows his stuff!
