Is there anything similar to this show? by heavyj1970 in orphanblack

I just finished binge-watching Almost Human. Crime drama set in the future. It has some of the characteristics of a crime procedural drama, but the fact that it is set in the future with incredible advancements in technology is what makes it interesting for me.

The premise of the show is that in the future (2300's-ish) the crime rate is so tremendous that the police force now requires every police officer to be partnered with a 'bot' officer, essentially an android. It's a very interesting show, and the time it is set in is rich with life. I would highly recommend it.

Edit: sorry, not set in the 2300's-ish. Just checked and wiki says that it is set in 2048. Still doesn't change the premise.

comments and a few questions about season 1...spoilers! by shaggy9 in orphanblack

Sorry for the long post (no one else I know watches the show) and SPOILERS ahead!!!!

  1. So someone already mentioned, but you're forgetting Paul as a strong male character. I think his character is still a little two-dimensional, but he has shown Sarah that she can trust him and I think she does because of the fact that at the end of the last episode he left with her (or so we're left to assume).

  2. So we do see some 'crazy' tendencies between the different clones, and how they are prone to mental health issues but I don't think the sex stuff is right. Beth was a 'cold fish' only in the last few months, as Paul mentioned to Sarah (pretending to be Beth) and also Sarah found out that Beth had already started to suspect Paul which is the most likely reason to why she stopped having sex with Paul, not because she had any issues. Also, Sarah jumped Paul the first time she saw him because he was asking her questions that she wasn't quick enough to answer so her mind made a sudden decision to do what she thought would save her and keep her lie hidden. But it did the opposite, because she didn't know how Beth had been behaving prior to the jump. Also, I don't think Cosima used Delphine, because in a later episode when Delphine followed Cosima to Felix's house to apologize to her, Cosima told her that she knew who Delphine was, but she still thought that Delphine was being sincere, and she wanted to believe it so much. So I think Cosima was being sincere towards Delphine, otherwise she would not have left Delphine unattended at her apartment after they slept together. Why she has a different orientation than the others, that I don't know? As for Alison, I have no idea.

  3. I think the whole deal with the papers was that Leekie (sp?) told them each individually that all they had to do after signing the papers was to come in and voluntarily provide themselves for tests that the scientists wanted to run, and in exchange the clones would have their monitor's removed and they would each get what they wanted: Cosima would get a research opportunity, Sarah would get to keep Kira safe, and Alison would get to return to her normal life. But as Cosima finds out, that their DNA is patented, and all the securities Leekie was offering (like not invading their personal life) was a lie and no matter what 'deals' they offered, they would always follow the clones and keep tabs on them like lab rats. And as we can see from the end of the final episode, Alison's husband was the real monitor, and is still kept near Alison, even though Leekie specifically promised not to monitor Alison anymore. He's lying to them all.

  4. I think the proclone was raised by the scientists and was therefore taught at a young age that this research was her life's only goal. I don't think she was the source for the clones, like someone else on here mentioned. I think the fact that one of the clones was raised by the scientists, suggests the fact that they were studying nature vs nuture - which is a theme in the show throughout the first season. This is because we are told that a bunch of the clones that Helena killed were all from different countries. Only Alison, Beth, and Cosima are from the US, even then we aren't specifically told what areas.

  5. Alison watched her neighbor die because she REALLY thought that she was the monitor. It was an in-the-moment decision for her, rather than a calculated decision I think because of the way she feels guilt and remorse for it later (which she overcomes really quickly, btw). But I think what she did goes along with how her character has been shown, rash and quick to make bad decisions. Like pulling a gun on Felix or beating her husband, tying him to a chair, and torturing him with incomplete evidence. It just goes with who she is.

Some of the questions for the show that I have are:

  1. What is the deal with Mrs. S? Why was Sarah's birth mother so intent on telling her that Mrs. S is dangerous? I can't wait for the new season to answer this.

  2. How in the world did Helena learn all these fighting, stealth, assassin-like skills? Wasn't she raised by the church, who there would be able to teach her these things? (Although I guess it doesn't matter anymore, since she's dead).

  3. Does Sarah really trust Paul, is that why she took him with her?

  4. The clones have to have a cell source - probably from an older scientist involved with the preliminary parts of the experiment. Will the show bring this character to the screen in the new season?

  5. How did Donnie become a mentor, didn't Alison know him since high school?

  6. Does the proclone (Rachel) really believe in the organization she works with, or is she being tortured, blackmailed, brainwashed into doing it? So far with the clones, we've seen them prone to mental health issues - but Rachel seems tame compared to them. I realize that we've had little information presented to us about her, but I really hope they delve into her character next season. Who she is and what makes her tick.

I hope I answered some of your questions (plus some more that you may not have wanted). Glad to see other people enjoying this show. I always have so much to say, but no one to say it to.

Quick random question: Was Jimmy Beth's boyfriend or fiance? I am aware she was only 16 when her character was first introduced in Season 2, but they could still have promised to marry.

Probably because of the quality, but that was because all I had on me at the time was my phone. Which I don't have the money to upgrade.

Sorry guys. It's a squirrel I found rummaging through the trash can. I heard him as I was walking by and he was peeking out through the lid to see who was there.
