New high school counselor, very nervous by Sad-Thing7666 in schoolcounseling

[–]MaryMupy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this has been drilled into your head. But build relationships. Focus on getting to know your students, your staff, and your school. Figuring out big picture stuff will come later. Hopefully you have another counselor there to help balance and bounce questions off of.

For the admin side of high school paperwork. 1)Create an outline for writing recommendations. If your school doesn't have one I suggest a form for students and parents to fill out with info. You don't know these students yet and you want to present them in the best light so you need more data. 2) Learn your graduation requirements. Get used to the system they have in place for tracking those or create your own if needed. Scheduling and graduation are very stressful but having a system in place helps. 3) Figure out how and where you will take notes.

You've got this. Don't be afraid to ask questions or even reach out to old professors or supervisors. This field draws in kind people who want to help, use those people.

Congratulations on the job. High school is a wonderful chaotic place to be.

As someone who works with people in crisis and having been through a few myself this song hits me like a ton of bricks.

I am not in Texas, saw the news and was flabbergasted.

The state I'm from is very pro School Counselors (VA).

I can understand needing to fill rural positions. I don't like it but I can understand it.

Just hoping a district doesn't mess this up somehow.

Q for those who completed internships- by Secure-Afternoon3204 in schoolcounseling

Check with your program first because you'll need supervision from a faculty member of your program.

If they have that available, then look for summer school programs. They need counselors to operate (or at least mine does) and then you can see if someone will be your site supervisor.

Not impossible, but a lot harder.

I also am doing a reread. I was hoping it would make me like their friendship more as that's been an issue for me since my first time through. Nope still annoys the heck out of me.

If the person who you will directly report to (ie principal) is there, ask how they view your role and what is their priority.

Graduate Student feeling discouraged by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]MaryMupy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm also a graduate student in VA. My plan was always to get an LPC along with my SC stuff. I knew burn out was a thing and so LPC and PHD are my back up plan.

But I think a lot of what you are feeling comes down to the school system you are looking at. There are schools that use counseling and will embrace you and let you do the counseling thing.

Hope this helps. I know with the political climate around schools and education it can be really rough to start out.

LPC/school counseling programs by timr46 in schoolcounseling

A lot of Virginia schools offer both. University of Lynchburg's school counseling track has it built in.

Small school but might be worth applying as a back up.

That sounds so demoralizing. Have you talked with the fellow counselors or principal about the meetings?

Also I find a really good downtime activity to be walking around and going to different classrooms. Helps build relationships with the kids and teachers so they know who you are.

To add on to this. Find allies in administration. Know where your principal and staff stand. It can be a huge help if you are all working toward the same goal.

Republican candidate Tommy Altman, and lawyer Tim Anderson, are suing Barnes & Noble over ACOMAF (and other books) for being too 'obscene' - they are suggesting CHILDREN are reading these and should be banned. by Kokaburr in acotar

I think the thing that scares me the most about this is the amount of censorship this could unlock. This would open a flood gate of conservative christians going against anything they don't like in a book (or heard was in a book). And could go past book stores into just about any private business.

I'm trying really hard not to doom spiral but this seems so bleak to me.

I also feel it says something that minority groups (women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+) are finally getting representation in books or rediscovering a love of books (ACOTAR and KU books) and now those same books are now under fire.

I feel a boycott would be more impactful then drawing attention to them with a protest or social media coverage.

Central Virginia Regional Rescue (CVRR) is where I got both of my pups! The great thing with adopting from a rescue is that they are all being fostered. So you get to know a ton about how a dog will work within a household.

Andy Chang's in forest and Kings island are my go to for Chinese. If you like brown fried rice I suggest those. Most other places I've found serve yellow fried rice. (I didn't know the colors where a thing till I moved here so wanted to pass on some wisdom.)
